Thank you to everyone who signed my petition and raised your voice to request an appeal. There is critical value in the higher courts taking a closer look at how an 'extreme intoxication' defense could impact survivors of s*xual violenceđ§Ąđđž
____________
Ontario Court of Appeals passes new ruling that is yet another ASSAULT on women! Intoxication is now an excuse for s*xual assault.
As NDP Women's Issues Critic, I'm urging the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney-General to immediately appeal this!
This decision flies in the face of the progress made by the movement. It is already difficult for survivors of s*xual assault to come forward.
The lives of women, trans women and s*x workers have value and they deserve justice after surviving s*xual assault or violence!
TAKE ACTION!

Here is my official statement:
NDP Womenâs Issues critic urges appeal in intoxication defense for s*xual assault, violent crimes
TORONTO â Jill Andrew, the Official Opposition Womenâs Issues critic, is urging the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney-General to appeal an Ontario Court of Appeal decision that makes voluntary intoxication a legitimate defense in s*xual assault and violent crime cases.
âIt is already incredibly difficult for survivors of s*xual assault to come forward, and to get the justice they deserve for the heinous crimes committed against them,â said Andrew. âAnything that makes it even more difficult for survivors of s*xual assault and violent crimes to get that justice is a painful step backwards.â
Andrew said the Ontario Court of Appeal decision flies in the face of some of the progress made by the movement.
âThe NDP is strongly urging an appeal, so a higher court can weigh the impact this decision may have on the lives of women, trans women and s*x workers, their bodies, and the justice they deserve after surviving s*xual assault or violence.â
