Who’s ready for a Fleetwood history lesson for this week’s Throwback Thursday?
In 1994, Sharron Fleet and Jane Wooding combined both of their studios, Sharron’s Fleetbeat studio in Angus and Jane’s Collingwood Ballet studio, to create Fleet-Wood Dance Centre. Since then, Fleetwood has taught thousands of students priding on technique and a shared love of dance.
🩰Fleetwood’s main styles offered are Cecchetti ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary, modern, acro, musical theatre, and hip-hop. We have also offered tap, Scottish country and highland dancing in the past!
In 1996, Fleetwood started competing recital dances at Muskoka Ballet Gala, and would compete there every year for 20 years up until 2016.
In 1999, Fleetwood performed its first Nutcracker at the Gryphon Theatre in Barrie, now called the Georgian Theatre, and performs this timeless classical ballet at Meaford Hall every two years.
Also in 1999, Fleetwood was the first recipient of the Robert G Kemp Arts and Cultural Award which funded all of the lovely Nutcracker costumes still being used today, and are safely stored between performances.
In 2000, Fleetwood created Living Windows where dancers perform each year in the beautiful windows in our local stores in downtown Collingwood.
In 2010, Sharron received the Inaugural Arts and Culture award for promoting and teaching dance. We’ve had several students pursue post-secondary dance programs at several institutions such as George Brown, Toronto Metropolitan University, York University, National Ballet School of Canada, Quinte Ballet School of Canada, and Toronto Dance Theatre.
In 2013, Fleetwood started competing in local competitions. We compete in three competitions a year and receive high marks, overalls and special awards. Some of our dancers have even competed in national competitions.
In 2023, Fleetwood won Best Local Dance Studio with Collingwood Today’s Reader Choice Award and has won the award for the past three years in a row.
Today, we pride ourselves on our expanding history and continue to pride ourselves for being a family oriented studio and for welcoming anyone to our studio.
