Hello Station friends,

I'd like to introduce you to Duff Ryan, Principal architect of Ryan Company Architect Inc., who accepted the Station's "Excellence in Conservation Award" from the Governor General Edith Dumont on April 17th, 2026.

Duffy began work on the Station's renovation in 2022 with owner Mel Peddie, where together they created the vision for an adaptive use of the Station.

Duff led the building alterations design, rezoning, committee of adjustment, ONR agreements and permitting and provided all necessary drawings for the various spaces, converting the rail baggage room and waiting areas into housing.

Duff applied his philosophy "don't take more than you need, just that what is necessary to sustain"., with this, his approach maximized small footprint spaces for very functional and spacious layouts.

If you know Duffy, you know he has an innate ability to stick handle tough situations. From ONR easement concerns, to permit adjustments, to swiftly dealing with mid-construction structural impediments and ensuring minimal time loss for the team.

As an accomplished Architect, he developed his career in Toronto and fortunately for our region and our project, he returned to the North and has settled in the Temiscamingue and Temagami areas. He provides excellence in construction and architectural services for commercial, residential, institutional and industrial projects.

Duffy you led this project from inception to completion, thank you for ALWAYS responding to our calls and being the calm on some of those very stormy days. Your impact will truly never truly be realized.

Happy Sunday friends,

Great news to share ❤️🚂✨ …..

A few months ago I asked for your support with the nomination process of the Cobalt Train Station’s submission to the Ontario Heritage Trust awards in Excellence program.

With great pride, I share with you that three members of the renovation team received awards on April 17th, 2026.

Firstly, I’d like to acknowledge the behind the scenes work and diligence carried out by Duff Ryan, principal of Ryan Company Architect Inc., Mr. Ryan accepted the award from Lieutenant Governor General of Ontario, Edith Dumont at Queens Park on behalf of the project team.

Myself, Pam Hamel, appreciate being recognized for my contribution and accepted this award for Mel and Adam Peddie, the owners of the Cobalt Station, and all the trades employees at WB Melback Corporation! 🙂

There were many many contributors, from painters to carpenters, electricians and plumbers.

Also receiving an award of excellence is Dina Kubista, Production Designer, based in Toronto. Ms. Kubista played an instrumental role in the overall interior design elements. Ms. Kubista shares, “It’s been such a privilege to be part of the Cobalt project, it is such a unique piece of Canadian history - helping to bring it back to life for the community to come together and celebrate new beginnings made it very special.

I would like to also say a special thank you to Maggie Wilson, Chair of the Cobalt Historical Society, we thank you for your nomination, endorsement and continued support of time and knowledge.

On June 25th, 2025 the newly renovated property opened its doors as Cobalt Station, Event Hall & Guest Suites for business, as a destination for weddings, celebrations and conferences. It has quickly gained popularity with its accommodations and multi use options.

We thank everyone who played a part in the renovation and just as important, all of you who are using the Station and spreading the word.

I encourage you to explore Ontario's rich heritage and discover the historical sites, stories, and cultural landmarks that shape the province's unique identity.
