I’m actually a blend of both, using both my reading skills and play by ear. This allows me to learn songs quickly and accurately and I improvise quite a bit when I play.

A young guest once asked, as she noticed me playing, how am I playing so many notes when the sheet music has so little on it. I told her that I read the notes of the melody and the chords on top, and everything else is filling in with my own arrangement on the fly.

I’ll be honest, I use a lot of leadsheets… and sometimes, beginner-piano sheet music too!

I love the versatility of not being locked down to a printed arrangement, as it allows me creative freedom and fun at my gigs. I can flow with the music and adapt well to any changes in the event program.

With client’s requests, I will take a song, live with it, and make it my own. I’m constantly shaping each performance with expression, emotion, and a touch of spontaneity so that no two moments are ever exactly the same 😊

There’s something special about ending a ceremony with a song that feels like pure celebration. “Praise You” brought so much energy and joy. It was impossible not to have fun playing this one 😉
