🤔Thinking About Hiring a Wedding DJ?
With so many DJS offering “the best service” at “the best price,” it can get overwhelming fast. Here’s some honest advice from someone who’s been doing weddings, corporate parties, and private events for years:

💡 Price doesn’t always equal value — but ultra-low pricing often means corners are being cut, especially with equipment, prep, or support on the day of.

🎯 A good DJ is more than someone who plays songs. You want someone who understands your event, communicates clearly, shows up early, has backup plans, and keeps things running smooth — not just someone who takes requests.

📞 Take the time to talk. Out of all the DJS who message you, pick 2–3 and schedule phone or video calls. Why? Because talking to someone helps you feel out their vibe, professionalism, and how well they listen to your needs.
Booking through just emails or DMS may seem convenient, but a real conversation builds trust, uncovers important details, and makes it easier to spot red flags or find the right fit.

💬 If a DJ says “I can work with your budget” without asking anything about your needs, that’s a red flag. Pricing should be based on what’s required to make your day seamless — not just matching a number.

🎧 Should DJS Raise Their Prices in 2025, 2026?
Let’s talk about it.

There’s always a lot of debate about pricing — when to raise rates, by how much, and what’s “too much.” But here’s the truth:
✔️ Equipment costs have gone up
✔️ Insurance, music subscriptions, transportation — it’s all more expensive
✔️ Experience and professionalism should be reflected in value

But here are both sides:

👍 The Positives of Raising Rates:

Attracts more serious clients

Allows for better gear, better service, and less burnout

Reflects your growth, skill, and demand

👎 The Risks:

You may lose price-sensitive leads

It forces you to clearly communicate value (but that’s a good thing, too)

💬 “Can you work with our budget?”
This is a question many DJS get, but here’s something to think about:

📉 Doing events below your value to book the gig isn’t sustainable. You may be covering hours of prep, thousands in gear, and weekend availability — all for less than it’s worth.

📈 Sticking to your pricing doesn’t make you greedy — it shows you value your work and time. It also helps set the standard for our industry.

That said, instead of dropping your price, you can:
• Offer a smaller package
• Remove non-essentials
• Be honest: “Here’s what I can offer at your budget — and here’s what’s included when we go with the full experience.”

🎯 Clients don’t always understand what goes into a professional DJ service. So educate them — don’t undercut yourself.

Here's the hard truth:

If you're a full-time DJ and you're only charging $1,200–$2,500 per wedding without a real structure, it’s almost impossible to survive long-term.

After gear costs, admin time, travel, marketing, insurance, taxes — not to mention your actual living expenses like rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, and health care...

The real numbers?

👉 To pay yourself a livable salary of $60,000/year after taxes and expenses (and save for retirement), a full-time DJ needs to gross at least $120,000/year —
which often means doing 40–50+ weddings a year at $2,500–$3,000+ each.

Anything less, and you're not building a sustainable career — you're just surviving.

🎯 A professional DJ business must:
Charge appropriately for experience, skill, and service
Offer structured packages
Reinvest into better gear, marketing, and business systems
Plan for taxes, retirement, and emergencies
If you treat DJing like a business, it will pay you like one.
If you treat it like a hobby, it will cost you like one.

Why is it that when one of us asks for advice or shares something helpful, it turns into a competition or criticism?

Truth is — we’re all still learning. Every event teaches us something new. None of us has all the answers, and that’s okay. The moment we stop being open to learning from each other is the moment we stop growing in this industry.

✅ Let’s be open.
✅ Let’s encourage honest questions.
✅ Let’s celebrate shared experiences — not shame them.

There’s more than enough room for all of us in this industry. Let’s raise the standard together — not tear each other down.
