I am saddened by what is happening in the United States right now. I am having trouble trying to understand why things have gotten so out of hand and more important, why so very little has been done about it as the years have passed by. I probably never will understand racism and why some people with a different colored skin are treated differently. Please know that I stand with you and I can empathize with the frustration, the anger and the fear that you must have day after day. Being mistreated, threatened, beaten or even murdered simply because you are black is reprehensible!
I stand with the black community. Black lives matter and it is time that everybody starts treating black people fairly. All of us can help by speaking out against the injustice. Politicians and people in positions of power, especially the police, need to stop degrading them, bullying them and start LISTENING to them! We all need to work together to incorporate change. Hopefully the tragic events that are happening in the US will get better and result in justice and positive change!
I will step back on social media this week in favor of those voices who have the words and life experiences that need to be shared and heard.
I am listening.

With the Alberta Government trying to slow done the spread of COVID-19, I think everyone needs to rethink their attitude towards this frightening virus! It seems like a lot of people do not understand what is involved in “social distancing”. I encourage you to follow Alberta and federal guidelines on what to do! These are some of the things that I have heard in the last couple of days in the Calgary area:

- A young man in his mid 30s at the doctor’s office commenting on Prime Minister’s tv appearance, “He (the Prime Minister) is just using scare tactics”.
- “Come over for a glass of wine tonight. I’ve sterilized my house!”
- An invitation to an opera performance to be held in the next couple of days.
- A wedding vendor who commented that she would not cancel her services for her wedding couples who are planning on getting married in the next couple of months. She just couldn’t do that to them!”
- A university student who has flown out of province this week and is now feeling sick.
- Line ups at the grocery store in an attempt to get groceries - yes, I was one of them!
- “ I just got back from the states but I’m not spreading any virus because I’ve only been to the grocery store and I don’t go out much!
- I can’t come back to Canada yet. I’m meeting with family members in the States on April 1st.”

Too many people are picking and choosing what parts of “social distancing” they want to follow. This situation is serious and it is going to get worse! People of all ages are getting infected and the prediction is that there are not enough hospital beds, supplies and equipment to deal with the virus. Medical personal will not be able to handle the amount of people who will get sick. We need to stop making exceptions for why we should ignore government recommendations. I have heard from a medical doctor in Calgary who is on the decision making board for Foothills Hospital and he says that we in Calgary are where Italy was about three weeks ago.

This is affecting everyone and we need to work together to do all we can to deal with this crisis. It is time to stop thinking about “me” and start thinking about how it will affect others and what WE can do to help solve this situation. Together we need to work together so we can slow down the curve and help the medical experts handle this virus better.
