About The Civic:
The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1976 and has been serving the Calgary community for nearly 50 years! Conducted by our acclaimed music director, Rolf Bertsch, The Civic is fortunate to engage superb musicians from all career paths and walks of life. Our concert season includes five performances that are held on Sunday afternoons at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, including the annual Rising Stars performance, which provides opportunities for winners of the annual Rotary Calgary Concerto Competition (RC3) to perform with the orchestra.

About The Rotary Calgary Concerto Competition: Since 1981, this competition has provided a platform for the best young classical musicians in Calgary, aged 18 and under, to demonstrate their skills, celebrating and supporting the next generation of classical music talent in the community. The winners of the competition are given the unique chance to collaborate with the Calgary Civic Symphony in its annual Rising Stars concert at the Jack Singer Concert Hall.

Gisela leads a virtual "treasure chest" of Latin music performers on our stage this week. Not to be missed! ~Damon Johnston, Artistic Director

This special concert invites audiences into a vibrant and poetic soundscape of Latin American music in Spanish. Through timeless songs and rich musical traditions, the trio weaves a tapestry of culture, memory, and emotion where each note carries the warmth of heritage and the pulse of contemporary expression.

More than a concert, this is an immersive artistic experience, a meeting point between cultures, a celebration of identity, and a space where improvisation and emotion unfold in real time. From delicate, intimate moments to rhythmically charged passages, the performance captures the essence of Latin America; passionate, soulful, and profoundly human.

Gisela Romero is a Mexican-born, Calgary-based vocalist whose artistry is rooted in the soul of Latin America. With a velvety voice and a gift for deeply expressive storytelling, she transforms each song into an intimate and moving experience.

She is joined by the remarkable Esteban Herrera on piano and Orlando Retana on cajón, two masterful musicians whose sensitivity, virtuosity, and improvisational brilliance elevate every performance into a living, breathing dialogue of sound.

As a pianist he performs both classical and contemporary music regularly across Canada, Europe, and the United States. Most recent concerto performances include Bela Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Orchestre 21, led by Paolo Bellomia. He compositions have been performed by Canadian artists and ensembles including the Fibonacci Trio, Luminous Voices, the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, Brittany Rae, Jonathon Adams, Continuum Contemporary Music’s HATCH! ensemble, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Land’s End Ensemble, and featured in the documentary film Flora Aurima Devatine, les étoiles de l’aurore – Te feti’a taiao ‘averau. Bente Hansen is happily retired after teaching music theory and collaborating with student performers at the University of Lethbridge for 28 years. She also enjoys a prolific career as a rehearsal/pit pianist and musical director for numerous productions at the university and through community theatre in Lethbridge. She is a sought after soloist and collaborator, playing concerts around Alberta, in Denmark and Colombia. She continues to collaborate with university students and is honoured to be sharing this concert with the very talented Jesse Plessis. And retirement? “Best ‘job’ she’s ever had”!
