Beach Person or Pool Person?

It's one of the first questions I ask every client booking a winter all-inclusive - Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica or anywhere else in the Caribbean - & the answer changes everything about how I plan their trip.

Beach People spend their days under a palapa listening to the waves. The pool is a quick cool-off. The beach is the whole reason they came.

Pool People live poolside. The energy, the atmosphere, the swim-up bar, the people around them - that's where the vacation happens. They might visit the beach, but the pool is where they'll spend most of their time.

These two vacations are planned completely differently.

If you're a Beach Person, we start with the beach itself. The sand, the water, the setting. Then we find the property that delivers on it.

If you're a Pool Person, we start with the resort. The pool complex, the atmosphere, the swim-up bar, the layout & the activities matter most.

Of course, most people aren't entirely one or the other and that's fine. Knowing where you fall on that spectrum is part of the process.

It also changes where we put the money.

A Beach Person doesn't need the most elaborate pool complex on the coast. A Pool Person doesn't need to pay a premium for sand they'll barely visit. You don't have to spend for both when you only need one.

That's where the smart planning happens and this is why I ask a lot of questions before I ever name a single resort.

Winter 2026-2027 is booking now.

Most people start by comparing resorts. I start by figuring out how you actually vacation.

I have never been on a safari.

I have never sat in an open jeep at 5am watching the African bush come alive around me. I have never had an elephant walk twenty feet from my vehicle. I have never heard a lion at night.

But Africa has never been far from my mind. I've been animal obsessed my whole life, and for just as long, Africa has been the trip. Not a trip. The trip. The one that lives at the top of the list. And this is when it stops being a someday.

A game drive starts before sunrise, because that's when the animals move. You climb into an open vehicle with your guide and head out while the sky is still dark - coffee in hand, cool air, everyone quietly watching the bush wake up around them.

Safari is so much more immersive than most people imagine. You're moving through their space, on their schedule, while your guide reads the land the way you'd read a room. Tracks in the dirt. Bird calls. Movement in the grass. A flick of an ear through the trees.

Everyone talks about the Big Five - elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino. Yes. Absolutely yes. But I have always been equally obsessed with the rest of it. Giraffes moving through acacia trees at golden hour. Zebras - and if you know me at all, you know I grew up with horses and have wanted a zebra of my own since I was small - haha. Hippos at the waterline. Hyenas. Wildebeest. Impalas moving through the bush in huge numbers.

We'll spend time in Kruger National Park, then continue into a private reserve where the experience becomes even more immersive - smaller groups, incredible guides, sunrise and sunset game drives, campfires, stories shared after a day in the bush, and nights spent in beautiful tented lodges right in the middle of it all. One evening, we'll gather for a traditional South African boma braai - an open-air dinner around the fire under the African sky. That part already feels familiar to me in the best possible way. Prairie people understand the magic of ending a day around a fire.

And no - this is not the version of Africa that requires a trust fund.

The ultra-luxury safari camps with private plunge pools and butler service absolutely exist, and they are stunning. But they are not the only way to experience Africa in a meaningful, unforgettable way. This trip has never been about marble bathrooms and white-glove service. It's about the experience itself - the wildlife, the atmosphere, the guides, the feeling of completely disconnecting from normal life for a little while and stepping into a world that has felt almost mythical to me for years.

I plan all my trips the same way: where does the money actually matter, and where does it not? On safari, it matters who your guides are, how much time you spend out in the field, the places you access, and the experience you're having while you're there.

I know there are people reading this who feel the exact same pull toward Africa that I do. People who have always thought "someday." People who maybe never pictured themselves actually doing it - but who feel something stir every time they see a photo, a video, or a post like this.

If that's you, keep following along. This one's for you too.

I cannot wait for this adventure. And I'm going to bring some of you with me.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared that I’m officially heading to Africa in 2027!

And one of the things that has me MOST excited is the fact that I’m doing this trip with G Adventures.

First of all - they’re Canadian, which I already love. But beyond that, G Adventures has built their company around the idea that travel should actually benefit the places you visit, not just move tourists through them.

And honestly, I think Africa is one of the BEST places to travel this way.

Some of the things I love most about how they approach travel:

• Smaller groups, which means more flexibility, more connection, and fewer giant bus-herd moments

• Local guides who actually live there and understand the culture, wildlife, history, and realities of the destination

• Community tourism that supports locally owned hotels, restaurants, experiences, and businesses instead of everything being funnelled through giant international chains

• A huge focus on conservation, wildlife education, and understanding the places you’re visiting - not just checking animals off a list

• Trips designed to help you experience a destination instead of just looking at it through a window

One of the things they’re especially known for is their Ripple Score, which measures how much of your travel dollars stay in the local communities you visit.

That’s exactly how I want to experience a place like Africa.

The safari I’m doing is also part of their National Geographic Journeys collection, which feels like such a perfect fit because it blends safari adventure with storytelling, conservation, culture, and deeper local experiences.

Because yes, obviously I want to see elephants and giraffes and cheetahs in the wild. I have zero shame about how excited I am about that part.

But I also want this trip to mean something beyond just taking pictures of animals from a jeep.

That’s what I love about this style of travel.

Also - if you’re looking for a really good summer read, grab Looptail by Bruce P**n Tip (founder of G Adventures). And if you’re in the mood for a documentary night, watch The Last Tourist, which dives into the bigger conversation around ethical and meaningful tourism.

And if you’re already feeling the pull of Africa just reading this... good.

We’re just getting started. 😘

Well... that's officially a wrap on my 10-year Wanderlori Travel Client Appreciation Giveaway. ☕✈️

First, congratulations to all five winners - I'll be reaching out shortly to arrange pickup for your prizes.

But more than anything, I just want to say thank you.

When I launched this giveaway a couple of weeks ago, I thought people would mostly comment destinations. Mexico. Jamaica. Italy. Done.

Instead, so many of you shared stories.

Stories about honeymoons and destination weddings, dream trips years in the making, family vacations, traveling with grown kids, introducing little ones to travel for the first time, and moments where having someone in your corner made all the difference.

All the comments got me right in the heart. 🥰

Because the reality is - I help plan the trips, I obsess over the details, I answer the questions and troubleshoot the problems, and then people go off and live these experiences. I don't always get to hear what those trips become afterward. Getting to read your memories and reflections genuinely reminded me why I love doing this so much.

I try to plan every vacation the way I would want my own planned - though every client is different. Some want me to handle every detail from start to finish. Some want the framework booked and the rest consulted on. Some arrive with everything already decided and just want someone in their corner to execute it and have their back.

However you come to me, that's exactly how I'll work with you.

I don't take lightly the trust people place in me with their time, their money, their families, and their celebrations.

I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and that's okay too. But for the people who get it - I'm incredibly grateful that you continue to choose me year after year.

And beyond all of that - I just love travel. The experiences, the culture, the perspective, and the memories it creates with the people we love most.

The more I travel, the more I realize that people all over the world really aren't that different from us. Most of us want the same things - love, laughter, connection, a sense of belonging, and a life well lived.

So thank you. For your stories, your support, your trust, and for ten incredibly meaningful years. ❤️

As I sit here drinking my morning coffee, reading through all of your entries over the past couple of weeks, I couldn’t resist adding one more thing before tonight’s draw.

Just a little extra thank you for all the stories, memories, laughs, and kind words you’ve shared with me throughout this giveaway.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸

We’re down to the final collection in my 10-year Wanderlori Travel Client Appreciation Giveaway… and this one might be the most practical of the bunch.

This is the kind of collection you don’t think about until you’re already at the airport… and then you really wish you had it.

Here’s the next collection…

This one is all about those smart, practical pieces that make travel easier once you’re actually in it.

• Roots sling bag with anti-theft features (proudly Canadian)
This is one of those things that works everywhere - beach days, excursions, Europe, city exploring.
Keeps everything close, secure, and easy to access without digging around in a big bag.
It also solves the age-old travel problem of one person ending up as the designated pack mule. You know exactly what I mean - pockets full, purse stuffed with overflow, holding everyone’s everything.
This bag is for him or for her… and it means everyone carries their own 😄

• Digital luggage scale
This one is pure peace of mind.
Everything weighs fine on the way there… and somehow weighs more on the way home. Even if you swear you didn’t buy anything.
With baggage fees what they are now, this little tool can save you from an expensive surprise at the airport.

• Airplane phone mount
This one gets comments every single time. Flight attendants ask where to buy it. Fellow travelers take photos of it.
It clips onto your tray table or the seat in front of you so your phone stays in place - no dropping it, no digging under the seat to retrieve it.
And it adjusts, which means you can actually see your screen without glare. One of those small things that makes a long flight a lot more comfortable.

• USB to USB-C adapter
Because somehow… the planes still haven’t caught up.
Most aircraft still have USB ports, while most newer devices use USB-C. This little adapter makes sure you can actually charge your phone when you need to - especially when those plug-in outlets don’t cooperate.

This collection won’t make the highlight reel - but it will make your trip smoother in ways you’ll notice every single time.

To enter, head back to the original giveaway post and drop your comment there - that’s the one I’m tracking entries from.

𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆-𝗢𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸

As part of my 10-year Wanderlori Travel Client Appreciation Giveaway, I’ve been reading through your entries - and one thing is very clear: it’s the little details that make travel feel easy.

Here's the next one...

This one is for the traveler who likes a little order in the chaos of travel day.

• Packing Cube Set
Packing cubes are the reason I travel carry-on only. This set includes 4 of multiple sizes, so you can organize everything easily - by category or by outfit. Especially helpful on multi-destination trips when you’re moving every couple of nights.

Bonus: if you ever get flagged at customs and your bag gets searched, everything stays. No unmentionables launched across the airport floor for everyone to witness. You're welcome.

• Portable Power Bank
Please excuse my geek-out moment.
This is a UGreen MagFlow Qi2 25W 10,000 mAh with built-in cable. It charges up to three devices at once - wireless magnetic charging plus two USB-C ports. Phone, watch, earbuds, all at the same time. Ultra fast and compact.
Because you can't take 32,000 photos on your phone with a dead battery! Ha!

• "Bag of Tricks" Canvas Travel Pouch
Charge cords, lip balm, meds, band-aids, a tiny sewing kit, suitcase lock, gum - all the little essentials that otherwise end up loose at the bottom of your bag.
I love mine so much I keep giving them away as gifts, so I had to include one here.

• Little Suitcase Hand Sanitizer Holder
I bought it because it's adorable, I won't pretend otherwise.
A tiny suitcase holding a lavender & bergamot pocket sanitizer - because airports are germy, not everyone washes their hands, and we all know it.

These items work just as well with checked luggage - but I'm not going to pretend I'm not hoping this is the collection that finally converts you to Team Carry-On. Just saying. 😄
