On Tuesday, we had our first "Taste of Place Dinner". Since moving here, Alan and I have wanted to create a meal that gives a nod to our new home so that visitors can have a taste of The Bay and we can share some stories with them.
We started off with salmon and clam chowder, followed by wild-caught sockeye salmon. For dessert, I was excited to make sweet bannock donuts.
While making the bannock, I felt an overwhelming sense of happiness. It was my first time making it. A family was playing next door on the playground, and Alan brought them out some bannock and chowder to try. We watched through the window as our new friends smiled and enjoyed it. To be candid, a few tears filled our eyes. Watching this kid run around in bare feet, dipping his bannock in the chowder, and screaming with joy filled my heart.
Our guests were thrilled with the meal. I told stories of what I have learned on the island, turning the meal into an educational experience. I explained that the fish stew, salmon, and bannock are staples of the people who live here and how important it is to not support fish farming. I shared how we had our first potluck in the big house and got to try fish soup, salmon and bannock there. For this menu we just need some grease lol
In my past life, I've owned restaurants in Niagara and always shared stories of the wine and where to eat. Now, I have the gift of sharing with guests from around the world the living culture of the people of this island - how strong, resilient, kind, and welcoming they are.
We are very much looking forward to creating this meal every week.
Although we haven't been here for long, Alan and I are forever changed by the people we have met here.
Every single visitor and local asks me in some way, "Why did you choose to move to Alert Bay of all places?" I have many answers, but one sticks out in my soul: I'm coming home.
In a past life, I've been here. While making bannock and watching that kid enjoy it, I felt like I've been here before. I’m home ❤️
