The majestic Punakha Dzong, symbolically known as Palace of a great happiness/bliss was built in 1637 by the great Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. It's the most beautiful & auspicious fotress in the country. All the important events like coronation of kings and royal weddings of past to present kings are held here in this Dzong. It was capital of Bhutan until 1955. Today it serves as winter residence for Je Khenpo(Chief Abbot) and hundreds of monks of the Central Monastic Body.

Spring season is the best timing to visit this Majestic Dzong as it will be surrounded by beautiful mauve flowers of Jacaranda.
