Sometimes you don’t really know what someone took away from an experience until you hear them tell it.

We knew what we hoped the students would get from spending the day with us, but hearing it in their own words was one of the best parts.

They worked, asked questions, got involved and experienced what happens when the planning moves from paper to event day.

Thank you to the students for showing up ready to learn and work, to Sunland for being open to the collaboration, and to the Freeport Players’ Guild for giving us the space to make it happen.

We got to share a little of what we know.

Talking about the work is one thing. Getting to experience it is completely different.

Last year, I had the opportunity to speak with students from Sunland about event planning and the industry. At the end of that session, I told them that when they got to the 11th grade, if the opportunity came up, I’d bring them along.

This was that opportunity.

Through the Freeport Players’ Guild President’s Cocktail Party, they got to work alongside us and experience firsthand what it takes to bring an event together.

Special thanks to Andrew of Events by Creme de la Creme for working with the students and helping guide them through the process.

There’s only so much you can teach in a classroom. Sometimes, you have to get in there and do the work.

A good reminder that sometimes the best way to share what you know is to make room for someone else to experience it.

Not every event needs the same level of support.

Some people want to hand it over and let someone else handle the details. Others love being in the middle of the planning and just need support along the way. Then there are the DIY planners who are doing ALL the things. 😂

There’s no one way to plan an event. It’s about knowing what works for you and where you may need a little help.

Event planning has taught me a lot, and not just about events.

Plans will change.
The right people matter.
Pretty isn’t the plan.
Details matter.

Experience definitely changes how you plan.

Some of these lessons came easily. Others I learned somewhere between a timeline changing, a vendor calling and figuring it out in real time.

That’s the thing about experience. Eventually, the lessons become part of how you work.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing a series of conversations around event planning, from what the process actually looks like to working with a planner and a few things experience has taught me along the way.

And we’re starting with the process.

Before the setup, the décor and the final reveal, there are conversations, decisions, logistics, changes, problem solving and a whole lot happening behind the scenes.

It may not always be the part everyone sees, but it’s what allows everything else to come together.

As a planner, knowing who to call, what they do well and how to bring the right people together is part of the work.

Because there’s a difference between planning an event and creating an experience.
