Lamentamos profundamente a morte de Lygia Fagundes Telles, uma das mais relevantes e singulares vozes da literatura brasileira, desde sua estreia no final dos anos 1930.

Admirada pela força de suas personagens femininas e pela contundência de suas histórias breves, é autora de obras como “Ciranda de pedra”, “Antes do baile verde” e “As meninas”. Ainda na adolescência publicou o seu primeiro livro de contos, “Porão e sobrado”.

Estudou direito e educação física antes de se dedicar exclusivamente à literatura. Foi eleita para a Academia Brasileira de Letras em 1985 e em 2005 recebeu o Prêmio Camões, o mais importante da literatura de língua portuguesa.

“Ninguém merece o Prêmio Camões mais do que você, não apenas pela alta qualidade da obra, mas pela dignidade da carreira, construída com persistência equivalente à força do talento, num exemplo de vocação servida desde a adolescência pelo trabalho consciente.” — Antonio Candido em carta de 2005 à autora.

A editora se solidariza com familiares, amigos e leitores e seguirá homenageando a autora com conteúdos sobre sua trajetória e suas obras.

Today is the last day of school in NYC. Remember that feeling? After endless days of suffering the warm breezes blowing through the open windows in the classroom, sweet freedom was on the horizon. We sat, like The Birdman of Alcatraz, counting the hours until our sentence was up and we could breathe the air of free men once more.

The stress of final exams was now only a memory. The pressure of standing at the blackboard staring at an algebra problem that might as well been in Sanskrit, while the teacher and your snickering classmates waited for your brilliant solution was just a bad dream. When that bell rang, you were out that door with wings on your feet.

But first, the screws had to check you out. Text books were examined for any marks you might have doodled before they were turned in for re-use. Then we had to take out the cleaning materials we brought in from home and scrub our desks. (If they tried that today there would be an army of outraged parents speed dialing their lawyers.)

Then suddenly, you were standing there in the sunshine. July and August were yours…all yours. In your uniform of white t-shirt, dungarees and Keds sneakers you were out the door as fast as you could down your Cheerios. Stickball, punchball, shirts vs. skins basketball at the playground, kick the can and ring-a-levio under the streetlights and ice cream on the stoop.

It was summer and the world was good.
