Na de officiële aankondiging en de voorstelling van de nieuwe legertop door het Comité Generaal van Defensie, heeft Generaal-majoor vlieger Bruno Beeckmans officieel het bevel overgenomen over de Belgische Luchtmacht. Tijdens een plechtige ceremonie op de vliegbasis van Kleine-Brogel droeg Luitenant-generaal Geert De Decker, ir de fakkel over aan zijn opvolger. De commandowisseling markeert een historisch keerpunt voor de krijgsmacht en stond in het teken van hernieuwde strategische doelen, operationeel vertrouwen en de grote transformatie van het luchtwapen.

In zijn afscheidsrede blikte Luitenant-generaal De Decker tevreden terug op een intense periode waarin de technologische generatiesprong van de Luchtmacht definitief vorm kreeg. Hij wees onder meer op de aankomst van de eerste F-35 Lightning-gevechtsvliegtuigen en de succesvolle transitie naar de A400M Atlas. Volgens De Decker is het transportsegment hiermee geëvolueerd naar een breder concept van Air Mobility, waarbij Defensie niet langer simpelweg van A naar B vliegt, maar cruciale effecten creëert boven oorlogsgebied. De Decker benadrukte dat al deze moderne systemen, inclusief de MQ-9B Sky Guardian-drones, waardeloos zijn zonder de toewijding van het personeel. Hij bedankte zijn manschappen voor hun wereldwijde inzet en droeg het commando over met zijn kernmotto: "Missie eerst. Mensen altijd." De Decker zet zijn eigen carrière nu voort op het internationale toneel als militair vertegenwoordiger van België bij de NAVO.

Terug naar de kern
Chef Defensie Generaal Frederik Vansina nam vervolgens het woord voor een strategische toespraak waarin hij de krijgslijnen voor de toekomst uitzette. Vansina loofde de vertrekkende Air Chief omdat hij de Luchtmacht terug naar de absolute kern heeft geleid. Onder het commando van De Decker bleven begrippen als operationaliteit en paraatheid geen holle modewoorden op PowerPoint-slides, maar werden ze vertaald in concrete resultaten op het terrein. Vansina schetste het portret van De Decker als een no-nonsense operator met een diepe afkeer van bureaucratie, die door zijn eigen fysieke paraatheid altijd het goede voorbeeld gaf.

Met de installatie van Generaal-majoor Bruno Beeckmans schrijft de Luchtmacht geschiedenis. Het is de allereerste keer dat een officier met een pure achtergrond in het tactisch luchttransport wordt benoemd tot de hoogste baas van de Luchtmacht. Dit unieke profiel symboliseert de moderne, geïntegreerde koers van de Luchtmacht. Beeckmans brengt een schat aan operationele ervaring mee als voormalig korpscommandant van de 15th Wing Air Transport in Melsbroek en bewees zijn daadkracht recent nog als het gezicht van de complexe humanitaire voedseldroppings boven de Gazastrook.

Toekomstige uitdagingen en onvoorwaardelijk vertrouwen
Generaal Vansina keek in zijn toespraak ook vooruit naar de immense uitdagingen die op de nieuwe Air Chief wachten. In een complex geopolitiek landschap moet de Luchtmacht de transitie naar de nieuwe wapensystemen de komende jaren verder voltooien, de operationele integratie van drones en de nieuwe H145M-helikopters stroomlijnen, en het nationale luchtruim beschermen tegen moderne hybride dreigingen. Daarnaast blijft verhoogde internationale samenwerking binnen het NAVO-partnerschap cruciaal om de collectieve afschrikking te garanderen en ervoor te zorgen dat land- en maritieme troepen hun taken te allen tijde veilig kunnen uitvoeren.

De Chef Defensie sloot de ceremonie af met een krachtige boodschap van onvoorwaardelijk vertrouwen. Hij verklaarde er absoluut gerust in te zijn dat Beeckmans met zijn specifieke ervaring, leiderschap en onvermoeibare spirit de Luchtmacht succesvol zal klaarstomen voor de opdrachten van morgen. Daarin staat de nieuwe generaal niet alleen: hij kan bouwen op een ijzersterke basis en rekenen op de daadkracht van alle mannen en vrouwen binnen de eenheden en de staven. Omdat dergelijke topfuncties ook veel vragen van het thuisfront, werd tot slot de echtgenote van Beeckmans officieel verwelkomd als de nieuwe "First Lady of the Air Force", vergezeld van een symbolisch bloemetje als waardering voor de steun en flexibiliteit die dit nieuwe defensie-avontuur van het gezin zal vragen.

Suite à l'annonce officielle et à la présentation des nouveaux dirigeants de l'armée par le Comité Général de la Défense, le Général-major aviateur Bruno Beeckmans a officiellement pris le commandement de la force aérienne. Lors d'une cérémonie solennelle sur la base aérienne de Kleine-Brogel, le Lieutenant-général aviateur Geert De Decker, ir a passé le flambeau à son successeur. Ce changement de commandement marque un tournant historique pour les forces armées et s'est déroulé sous le signe du renouvellement des objectifs stratégiques, de la confiance opérationnelle et de la transformation majeure de l'arme aérienne.

Dans son discours d'adieu, le Lieutenant-général De Decker est revenu avec satisfaction sur une période intense au cours de laquelle le saut générationnel et technologique de la Force aėrienne a définitivement pris forme. En outre, le renforcement de la coopération internationale au sein du partenariat de l'OTAN reste crucial pour garantir la dissuasion collective et veiller à ce que les forces terrestres et maritimes puissent accomplir leurs missions en toute sécurité à tout moment.

Le Chef de la Défense a clôturé la cérémonie par un message fort de confiance inconditionnelle. Il s'est dit absolument certain que le général Beeckmans, fort de son expérience spécifique, de son leadership et de son esprit infatigable, saura préparer avec succès de la force aėrienne Belge aux missions de demain. Dans cette tâche, le nouveau général ne sera pas seul : il pourra s'appuyer sur des bases solides et compter sur la détermination de tous les hommes et femmes au sein des unités et des états-majors. Étant donné que de telles fonctions de haut niveau exigent également beaucoup du milieu familial, l'épouse du général Beeckmans a enfin été officiellement accueillie en tant que nouvelle « First Lady of the Air Force », accompagnée d'un bouquet de fleurs symbolique en signe de reconnaissance pour le soutien et la flexibilité que cette nouvelle aventure au sein de la Défense demandera à sa famille.

This change of command marks a historic turning point for the armed forces, highlighting renewed strategic goals, operational confidence, and the major transformation of the air arm.

In his farewell address, Lieutenant General De Decker looked back with satisfaction on an intense period during which the Air force's technological generational leap definitively took shape. He highlighted, among other things, the arrival of the first F-35 Lightning fighter aircraft and the successful transition to the A400M Atlas. According to De Decker, the transport segment has thereby evolved into a broader concept of Air Mobility, where Defence no longer simply flies from A to B, but creates crucial effects over combat zones. De Decker emphasized that all these modern systems, including the MQ-9B Sky Guardian drones, are worthless without the dedication of the personnel. He thanked his troops for their global commitment and handed over command with his core motto: "Mission first. People always." General De Decker is now continuing his career on the international stage as the military representative of Belgium to NATO.

Vansina praised the outgoing Air Chief for leading the Air Force back to its absolute core. Under De Decker’s command, concepts such as operational readiness and capability did not remain hollow buzzwords on PowerPoint slides but were translated into concrete results on the ground. Vansina painted a portrait of De Decker as a no-nonsense operator with a deep aversion to bureaucracy, who always set the right example through his own physical fitness.

With the installation of Major General Bruno Beeckmans, the Belgian Air Force is making history. It is the very first time that an officer with a pure background in tactical air transport has been appointed as the top commander of the Air Force. This unique profile symbolises the modern, integrated course of the Belgian Air Force. Beeckmans brings a wealth of operational experience as the former wing commander of the 15th Wing Air Transport in Melsbroek and recently proved his decisiveness as the face of the complex humanitarian airdrops over the Gaza Strip.

Future Challenges and Unconditional Trust
In his speech, General Vansina also looked ahead to the immense challenges awaiting the new Air Chief. In a complex geopolitical landscape, the Air Force must further complete the transition to new weapon systems in the coming years, streamline the operational integration of drones and the new H145M helicopters, and protect national airspace against modern hybrid threats. In addition, enhanced international cooperation within the NATO partnership remains crucial to guarantee collective deterrence and to ensure that land and maritime forces can perform their duties safely at all times.

The Chief of Defence concluded the ceremony with a powerful message of unconditional trust. He declared his absolute confidence that Beeckmans, with his specific experience, leadership, and tireless spirit, will successfully prepare the Air Force for tomorrow's missions. The new general does not stand alone in this: he can build on a rock-solid foundation and rely on the resolve of all the men and women within the units and staffs. Because such top-level positions also demand a great deal from the home front, Beeckmans' wife was officially welcomed as the new "First Lady of the Air Force," accompanied by a symbolic bouquet of flowers in appreciation for the support and flexibility that this new defence adventure will require from the family.

Vandaag, vrijdag 28 mei, nam Generaal-majoor Bruno Beeckmans de fakkel over van Luitenant-generaal Geert De Decker, ir als Air Chief van de Belgische Luchtmacht. De nieuwe Air Chief werd op de luchtmachtbasis van Kleine-Brogel ingehuldigd in aanwezigheid van afvaardigingen van de Wings van de Luchtmacht.

Generaal-majoor vlieger Bruno Beeckmans, in de vliegwereld beter bekend onder zijn roepnaam “Beeck”, begon zijn carrière bij de Belgische Luchtmacht met een focus op tactisch luchttransport. In tegenstelling tot zijn voorgangers, die vrijwel allemaal een achtergrond hadden als jachtpiloot op de F-16, bouwde Beeckmans zijn expertise op binnen de transportvleugel. Hij diende jarenlang als instructeur-piloot en evaluator-piloot op de legendarische C-130 Hercules, het werkpaard van de Belgische defensie voor missies wereldwijd. Later was hij als project- en operationeel expert nauw betrokken bij de voorbereiding, de aankomst en de operationele integratie van het nieuwe, grotere Airbus A400M Atlas-transportvliegtuig, dat de C-130-vloot verving.

Beeckmans groeide door naar de absolute top binnen de transportwereld van Defensie en werd aangesteld als korpscommandant, met de rang van Kolonel-vlieger, van de 15th Wing Air Transport op de vliegbasis van Melsbroek. In deze rol gaf hij leiding aan alle strategische en tactische transportvluchten van de Belgische defensie. Op 23 april 2025 droeg hij het commando van de 15 Wing officieel over aan zijn opvolger, Kolonel-vlieger Quentin Aelvoet, tijdens een militaire ceremonie in Melsbroek.

Na zijn termijn in Melsbroek trad hij toe tot de Hoge Studies voor Veiligheid en Defensie aan het Koninklijk Hoger Instituut voor Defensie. Zo trad hij in de zomer van augustus 2025 op als het operationele gezicht van de Belgische defensie bij grootschalige humanitaire missies. Onder zijn leiding voerden de A400M-toestellen voedseldroppings uit boven de Gazastrook. Beeckmans noemde deze missies destijds "meer dan symbolisch", omdat elke parachute voor de mensen daar een teken van hoop is. Eind 2025 werd hij officieel gepromoveerd tot de eensterrenrang van Brigadegeneraal-vlieger.

Op 4 mei 2026 maakte het Comité Generaal van Defensie, onder leiding van minister van Defensie Theo Francken en Chef Defensie Frederik Vansina, een grootschalige herschikking van de legertop bekend. Tijdens deze vergadering werd Beeckmans formeel aangeduid als de nieuwe Commandant van de Luchtmacht, waarbij hij gelijktijdig zijn tweede ster kreeg als Generaal-majoor vlieger. Dit betekende een historische primeur, want het is in de geschiedenis van de Belgische krijgsmacht de allereerste keer dat een officier met een pure achtergrond in het luchttransport (en dus geen voormalig F-16 jachtpiloot) wordt benoemd tot de hoogste baas van de Luchtmacht. Ce vendredi 28 mai, le général de division Bruno Beeckmans a succédé au lieutenant-général Geert De Decker, ir, au poste de chef d'état-major de l'Armée de l'air belge. La cérémonie d'investiture s'est déroulée sur la base aérienne de Kleine-Brogel, en présence des délégations des différentes escadres de l'Armée de l'air.

Le Général-major aviateur Bruno Beeckmans, plus connu dans le monde de l'aviation sous son nom de code "Beeck", a débuté sa carrière au sein de la Force Aérienne belge en se spécialisant dans le transport aérien tactique. Contrairement à ses prédécesseurs, qui avaient presque tous un passé de pilote de chasse sur F-16, Bruno Beeckmans a développé son expertise au sein de l'aile de transport. Il a servi pendant de nombreuses années comme pilote-instructeur et pilote-évaluateur sur le légendaire C-130 Hercules, le bourreau de travail de la Défense belge pour les missions mondiales. Plus t**d, en tant qu'expert de projet et des opérations, il a été étroitement impliqué dans la préparation, l'arrivée et l'intégration opérationnelle du nouvel avion de transport plus grand, l'Airbus A400M Atlas, qui a remplacé la flotte de C-130.

Bruno Beeckmans a ensuite gravi les échelons jusqu'au sommet du monde du transport de la Défense et a été nommé chef de corps, avec le grade de Colonel aviateur, du 15ème Wing de Transport Aérien sur la base aérienne de Melsbroek. Dans ce rôle, il a dirigé tous les vols de transport stratégiques et tactiques de la Défense belge. Le 23 avril 2025, il a officiellement transféré le commandement du 15ème Wing à son successeur, le Colonel aviateur Quentin Aelvoet, lors d'une cérémonie militaire à Melsbroek.

Après son mandat à Melsbroek, il a rejoint les Hautes Études de Sécurité et de Défense à l'Institut Royal Supérieur de Défense. Sous sa direction, les A400M ont effectué des largages de nourriture au-dessus de la bande de Gaza. À l'époque, Bruno Beeckmans avait qualifié ces missions de "plus que symboliques", car chaque parachute représentait un signe d'espoir pour la population locale. Fin 2025, il a été officiellement promu au grade d'une étoile de Général de brigade aviateur.

Le 4 mai 2026, le Comité Général de la Défense, sous la direction du ministre de la Défense Theo Francken et du Chef de la Défense Frederik Vansina, a annoncé un remaniement majeur de la direction de l'armée. Au cours de cette réunion, Bruno Beeckmans a été officiellement désigné comme le nouveau Commandant de la Force Aérienne Belge, recevant simultanément sa deuxième étoile de Général-major aviateur. Cela représentait une première historique : c'est en effet la toute première fois dans l'histoire des forces armées belges qu'un officier issu exclusivement du transport aérien (et donc pas un ancien pilote de chasse sur F-16) est nommé à la tête de la Force Aérienne. Today, Friday, May 28, Major General Bruno Beeckmans took over the torch from Lieutenant General Geert De Decker, ir, as Air Chief of the Belgian Air Force. The new Air Chief was inaugurated at Kleine-Brogel Air Base in the presence of delegations from the Air Force Wings.

Major General Bruno Beeckmans, better known in the aviation world by his call sign “Beeck,” began his career with the Belgian Air Force with a clear focus on tactical air transport. Unlike his predecessors, nearly all of whom had a background as F-16 fighter pilots, Beeckmans built his expertise within the transport wing. For years, he served as an instructor pilot and evaluator pilot on the legendary C-130 Hercules, the workhorse of the Belgian Defence for global missions. Later, as a project and operational expert, he was closely involved in the preparation, arrival, and operational integration of the new, larger Airbus A400M Atlas transport aircraft, which replaced the C-130 fleet.

Beeckmans rose to the absolute top of the Defence transport sector and was appointed commander, holding the rank of Colonel, of the 15th Wing Air Transport at the Melsbroek air base. In this role, he commanded all strategic and tactical transport flights for the Belgian Defence. On April 23, 2025, he officially handed over command of the 15th Wing to his successor, Colonel Quentin Aelvoet, during a military ceremony in Melsbroek.

Following his tenure in Melsbroek, he joined the Higher Studies for Security and Defence at the Royal Higher Institute for Defence. During this period, in August 2025, he served as the operational face of the Belgian Defence during large-scale humanitarian missions. Under his leadership, the A400Ms carried out airdrops of food supplies over the Gaza Strip. At the time, Beeckmans described these missions as "more than symbolic," noting that for the people there, every parachute was a sign of hope. At the end of 2025, he was officially promoted to the one-star rank of Brigadier General.

On May 4, 2026, the General Defence Committee, led by Minister of Defence Theo Francken and Chief of Defence Frederik Vansina, announced a major reshuffle of the military leadership. During this meeting, Beeckmans was formally designated as the new Commander of the Air Force, while simultaneously receiving his second star as Major General. This marked a historic first, as it is the very first time in the history of the Belgian Air Force that an officer with a pure background in air transport (and therefore not a former F-16 fighter pilot) has been appointed as the top chief of the Air Force. INDUSTRY NEWS: A Major Milestone: BeLightning’s High-Tech Breakthrough for the F-35

In het bijzijn van premier Bart De Wever, minister van Defensie Theo Francken en regionale hoogwaardigheidsbekleders is op de site van Sonaca in Gosselies de eerste Belgische productielijn voor de horizontal tail planes van de F-35 officieel ingehuldigd. Een deel van de wereldwijde F-35-vloot krijgt voortaan zo'n horizontal tail van Belgische makelij. De Belgische luchtvaartindustrie levert hiermee een sleutelcomponent die instaat voor de stabiliteit en controle van het toestel tijdens de vlucht.

De horizontal tail bestaat uit twee beweegbare horizontale stabilisatoren, aangevuld met actuatoren die de beweging aansturen en geavanceerde besturingshardware. Deze in België geproduceerde stabilisatoren vormen een essentieel onderdeel van het vliegcontrolesysteem. Tijdens de vlucht zorgen ze voor de stabiliteit van het toestel, precieze en directe reacties op de besturing, en een veilige controle bij hoge speeds en zware belasting.

Om onder alle omstandigheden maximale controle te garanderen, maakt het systeem gebruik van hoogtechnologische vernieuwingen. Elke stabilizer beschikt over een aandrijving via Electro-Hydrostatic Actuators, die elektrische en hydraulische technologie combineren voor krachtige en uiterst precieze bewegingen. Daarnaast is elke stabilizer uitgerust met een bijkomend veiligheidssysteem, de Horizontal Tail Centering Actuator, die parallel aan de hoofdactuatoren wordt geïnstalleerd. Dit systeem neemt automatisch de controle over bij een elektrische storing of interne fout, waardoor de bestuurbaarheid gegarandeerd blijft en de operationele veiligheid sterk wordt verhoogd.

Deze technische complexiteit, in combinatie met de strenge eisen op het gebied van de stealth-eigenschappen van het toestel, vertaalt zich in bijzonder hoge eisen voor de industrie. België levert binnen het F-35-programma dan ook een hooggespecialiseerde bijdrage, gebaseerd op geavanceerde lucht- en ruimtevaartkennis en nauwkeurige productieprocessen. Dit omvat onder meer de verwerking van metalen en composietmaterialen, productie- en assemblageprocessen met zeer strikte toleranties, en strenge kwaliteits- en controleprocessen volgens internationale luchtvaart- en veiligheidsnormen. De productie van de horizontal tail is in handen van BeLightning, een joint venture tussen Asco Industries, Sabca en de Sonaca Group, die nauw samenwerken met Lockheed Martin en BAE Systems. De productie is verdeeld over drie Belgische sites, te weten de composietproductie bij Sabca Limburg, de metaalproductie bij Asco Industries en de eindassemblage bij Sonaca. Deze eindassemblage gebeurt in een gespecialiseerde faciliteit die is uitgerust met de nieuwste generatie apparatuur voor oppervlaktebewerking en precisieboringen. Sonaca bouwt daarbij verder op jarenlange ervaring in het produceren van complexe vliegtuigonderdelen binnen internationale luchtvaartprogramma’s.

De Belgische productie van de horizontal tail gaat dan ook veel verder dan een louter industriële opdracht; ze vertegenwoordigt een strategische opportuniteit en versterkt de positie van België binnen de internationale defensie- en luchtvaartwaardeketen. "We zijn er trots op bij te dragen aan dit sleutelproject, dat tegen 2035 een economische impact van meer dan €400 miljoen voor België en ongeveer 150 hooggekwalificeerde banen zal genereren, terwijl het de sterke positie van België binnen het industriële ecosysteem van de F-35 ondersteunt."

En présence du Premier ministre Bart De Wever, du ministre de la Défense Theo Francken et de dignitaires régionaux, la première ligne de production belge pour les gouvernes de profondeur (horizontal tail planes) du F-35 a été officiellement inaugurée sur le site de Sonaca à Gosselies. Une partie de la flotte mondiale de F-35 sera désormais équipée d'un empennage horizontal (horizontal tail) de fabrication belge. L'industrie aéronautique belge fournit ainsi un composant clé qui assure la stabilité et le contrôle de l'appareil en vol.

L'empennage horizontal se compose de deux stabilisateurs horizontaux mobiles, complétés par des actionneurs qui pilotent le mouvement et du matériel de commande avancé. Ces stabilisateurs produits en Belgique forment un élément essentiel du système de contrôle de vol. En vol, ils garantissent la stabilité de l'appareil, des réactions précises et directes aux commandes, ainsi qu'un contrôle sûr à des vitesses élevées et sous de lourdes charges.

Pour garantir un contrôle maximal en toutes circonstances, le système utilise des innovations de haute technologie. Chaque stabilisateur dispose d'un entraînement via des actionneurs électro-hydrostatiques (EHA), qui combinent les technologies électrique et hydraulique pour des mouvements puissants et extrêmement précis. De plus, chaque stabilisateur est équipé d'un système de sécurité supplémentaire, le Horizontal Tail Centering Actuator (HTCA), installé en parallèle des actionneurs principaux. Ce système prend automatiquement le relais en cas de panne électrique ou de défaillance interne, ce qui garantit le maintien de la maniabilité et renforce considérablement la sécurité opérationnelle.

Cette complexité technique, combinée aux exigences strictes en matière de furtivité (stealth) de l'appareil, se traduit par des exigences particulièrement élevées pour l'industrie. Dans le cadre du programme F-35, la Belgique apporte donc une contribution hautement spécialisée, basée sur des connaissances aérospatiales avancées et des processus de production rigoureux. Cela comprend notamment le traitement des métaux et des matériaux composites, des processus de production et d'assemblage avec des tolérances très strictes, ainsi que des processus de contrôle et de qualité rigoureux conformes aux normes internationales de l'aviation et de la sécurité. Ces exigences soulignent notamment la complexité des avions de chasse modernes, mais démontrent également le haut niveau de qualité de l'industrie belge.

La production de l'empennage horizontal est confiée à BeLightning, une joint-venture entre Asco Industries, Sabca et le groupe Sonaca, travaillant en étroite collaboration avec Lockheed Martin et BAE Systems. La production est répartie sur trois sites belges : la production de composites chez Sabca Limbourg, la production de pièces métalliques chez Asco Industries et l'assemblage final chez Sonaca. Cet assemblage final a lieu dans une infrastructure spécialisée, dotée d'équipements de dernière génération pour le traitement de surface et le perçage de précision. Sonaca s'appuie ici sur des années d'expérience dans la production de composants aéronautiques complexes au sein de programmes aéronautiques internationaux.

La production belge de l'empennage horizontal va donc bien au-delà d'une simple mission industrielle ; elle représente une opportunité stratégique et renforce la position de la Belgique au sein de la chaîne de valeur internationale de la défense et de l'aviation. "Nous sommes fiers de contribuer à ce projet clé qui générera plus de 400 millions d'euros de retombées économiques pour la Belgique et environ 150 emplois hautement qualifiés d'ici 2035, tout en soutenant la position forte de la Belgique au sein de l'écosystème industriel du F-35."

The first Belgian production line for F-35 horizontal tail planes was officially inaugurated at Sonaca’s site in Gosselies, in the presence of Prime Minister Bart De Wever, Minister of Defense Theo Francken, and regional dignitaries. Moving forward, a portion of the global F-35 fleet will be equipped with a Belgian-made horizontal tail. With this achievement, the Belgian aerospace industry is delivering a key component responsible for the aircraft's stability and control during flight.

The horizontal tail consists of two movable horizontal stabilizers, complemented by actuators that control the movement and advanced flight control hardware. These stabilizers, manufactured in Belgium, form an essential part of the flight control system. During flight, they ensure the aircraft's stability, precise and immediate control responses, and safe handling at high speeds and under heavy loads.

To guarantee maximum control under all conditions, the system utilizes high-tech innovations. Each stabilizer is driven by Electro-Hydrostatic Actuators (EHAs), which combine electrical and hydraulic technology for powerful and highly precise movements. In addition, each stabilizer is equipped with a backup safety system, the Horizontal Tail Centering Actuator (HTCA), installed in parallel with the main actuators. This system automatically takes over control in the event of an electrical failure or internal fault, ensuring that maneuverability is maintained and operational safety is significantly enhanced.

This technical complexity, combined with the stringent requirements regarding the aircraft's stealth capabilities, translates into exceptionally high demands on the industry. Consequently, Belgium delivers a highly specialized contribution to the F-35 program, based on advanced aerospace expertise and precision manufacturing processes. This includes the processing of metals and composite materials, production and assembly processes with extremely strict tolerances, and rigorous quality and control procedures in accordance with international aviation and safety standards. These requirements not only highlight the complexity of modern fighter jets but also demonstrate the high level of quality within the Belgian industry.

The production of the horizontal tail is managed by BeLightning, a joint venture between Asco Industries, Sabca, and the Sonaca Group, working in close cooperation with Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems. Production is divided across three Belgian sites: composite manufacturing at Sabca Limburg, metal production at Asco Industries, and final assembly at Sonaca.
