One of Africa’s most iconic vipers, the puff adder (Bitis arietans). These masters of camouflage often go unnoticed until you’re standing right next to them. Luckily, a team member spotted this young individual during a late night hike, so we could take a closer look. A thrilling and special encounter for sure!

Filming in the desert comes with its own set of challenges. When a sandstorm hits, priorities shift fast. Keeping your camera gear safe and dust-free suddenly becomes the number one concern.

On all my recent trips, I’ve relied on my camera backpack, and it has proven its worth time and again. Whether it’s blowing sand, sudden downpours, or rough terrain, this bag holds up without compromise. It’s become an essential part of my setup whenever I’m out in the wild.

One of my favourite lizards to encounter in Morocco is the helmethead gecko (Tarentola chazaliae). During the day, they hide under rocks or retreat into burrows. But once night falls, chances of spotting these little creatures go up - especially during road cruising!

Their flat, helmet-like head makes them easy to tell apart from other geckos. And with their cryptic colouration, they blend seamlessly into the sandy and rocky surroundings. A fun and cool-looking species if you ask me!

Tracking animals is one of the coolest things to do in a desert environment. You get up early - the sun still low on the horizon - and all the footprints and trails from the previous night slowly start to appear. Beetles, lizards, tortoises, snakes, even mammals.

One of the main targets here to find and document was the desert horned viper (Cerastes cerastes). When on the move, they leave subtle but very recognisable sidewinding patterns. But as the sun rises and shadows begin to fade, spotting these becomes increasingly difficult.

After a few hours of searching in the scorching heat, we had to head back to camp. When the sun is directly overhead, reading the terrain becomes nearly impossible. No Cerastes today, unfortunately, but still an awesome experience!

This is the Sahel egg eater (Dasypeltis sahelensis) - a non-venomous snake often misidentified due to its incredible mimicry of venomous vipers. While completely harmless to humans, Dasypeltis has evolved to imitate both the appearance and behaviour of venomous snakes.

When threatened, it inflates its body, rubs its keeled scales together, and produces a loud hissing sound - classic threat displays also seen in many viper species. In Morocco, this mimicry often leads people to confuse it with the highly venomous saw-scaled viper (Echis leucogaster), especially when the snake is partially hidden or encountered in low light.

Sometimes you just run into unexpected guests while out in the wild. Like this Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca) that suddenly appeared between my legs as we were tracking down Moroccan glass lizards. Not the species we set out to film that day, but always a very welcome surprise!

One of the last wells we checked during our Morocco expedition came with a little surprise: a beautiful juvenile Moorish viper (Daboia mauritanica). Young and small, but no less dangerous. These snakes are still highly venomous, and any encounter should be approached with care and respect.

The same goes for photographing or filming them. When we come across venomous snakes and want to get close for a shot, we always wear heavy-duty protective gear. We try to move slowly and calmly to avoid startling or provoking the animal. Depending on the situation, we make sure someone is on standby. Either to gently redirect the snake’s attention or to step in if it starts showing signs of agitation.

In any case, a very cool find to end the trip with and a lifer for me! 🙌🎥

While visiting this beautiful country once again, we decided to venture a bit further east in Morocco. Of course, we had to check out the iconic red dunes of Merzouga, which reach up to 160 meters tall.

What a strange and cool place! We arrived just in time to get some footage before a huge sandstorm hit.

Filming in Morocco is more than just sand and dust. This country keeps exceeding our expectations as we travel through rugged mountains, vast valleys, and huge sand dunes. A landscape full of contrast. What an amazing place to visit and document!

While plowing through dense Bornean jungles, we found over 60 snakes, including this white-bellied rat snake (Ptyas fusca). Not the brightest in colour, but still worth a moment of appreciation!
