CSC Food and Services

CSC Food and Services Over a period of almost 100 years, ACV-CSC Food and Services has developed a strong trade union federation with more than 260,000 members.

Our staff do everthing in their power on a daily basis to offer the members a good service. The ACV-CSC service is very broad:
- pay-out of union rebates
- complaints handling
- help with administrative formalities concerning
work
- information provision
- legal assistance
- creation of unemployment dossiers
- ...

Fortunately, we can count on a lot of volunteers who work actively in the unions.

Our more than 7,000 militants represent us in the workplace, and make us a strong movement. Our remit has become broader and broader in recent years. So we pay more attention to the training of militants, with our own non-profit training organisation ‘Vooruit met Vorming’ (Forward with Training). We also invest heavily in communication, to inform our members optimally about their rights. And of course we also attach a great deal of importance to representation of collective interests. Through social dialogue, we aim to improve the working conditions of all workers. At international level, we want to use our expertise to improve the situation of workers.

Today is International Migrant Day.

ACV Food and Services, through its project "fighting for migrant domestic workers rights", is committed to defend the rights of migrant domestic workers in Belgium.
More than ever, we want to make these workers visible, who, in the background, do heavy work that includes a wide range of tasks such as cleaning, preparing meals, caring for children, the elderly or family members with a disability.

Their situation, well known to all, always attracts the attention of the general public, creating emotion and indignation. However, such visibility largely overshadows socio-political and economic issues to make way for the "ordinary" forms of abuse and exploitation of the most vulnerable workers.

Existing policies do not sufficiently protect migrant domestic workers, particularly in terms of social security coverage: maternity leave, guaranteed minimum wage, weekly rest, etc., and can sometimes even contribute to increase existing vulnerabilities.

During our action on the18th of November, the League of Migrant Domestic Workers (from the Brussels region) was present in support of demands for a wage increase for household workers in the service voucher sector.
They carried out a documentary in order to highlight the demands of the household workers in the sector and recall that they also experience the same problems but, in the absence of regularisation, have no right to enforce them.

ACV Food and Services will never give up! Nor for household workers in the Service voucher sector, nor for Migrant domestic workers.
!Same fight!
Together for the regularisation of a migrant workforce in Belgium and around the world!

The domestic workers are one of the most vulnerable working groups on the international level. That is why the IDWF (International Domestic Workers Federation) launches the campaign “My Fair Home” on 16. June. The charter ‘My Fair Home’ was drawn up to protect domestic workers. Every employer willing to offer his personnel decent working conditions is invited to sign the charter. “This charter is an important step for better working conditions for the domestic workers all over the world”, says Grace Papa, union secretary for ACV Food and Services. “In Belgium, the situation is more positive than abroad. We have our system of service vouchers, which means that the worker is employed by the service voucher company and not directly by the client. We want to set the example and have as many charters signed as possible. Multiple service voucher companies already did : Proxi Home Services, Daoust, Unitis, Manpower, Servihome,…”

The date of the 16. June is not chosen by accident ! Five years ago, the International Labour Organisation concluded an important convention for the domestic workers, C189. “It was a breakthrough for the domestic workers. This convention obliges employers to draw up a contract, which entitles the domestic workers to social protection and week-end rest. The convention must be ratified and converted into the national legislation of the different countries. And that is where the shoe pinches… Up till now, 25 countries have done so, one of them is Belgium. We continue to exert pressure, for example with this charter.”

The fishing industry employs over 2 million workers worldwide. The situation of workers is especially bad in Asia, where forced labour and human trafficking have been reported. The fish caught in these degrading circumstances also ends up in our plates ! It’s high time to reinforce the rights of these workers. That is why we protested last Wednesday at the Brussels’ Seafood Expo, the world’s largest seafood trade fair.

Before the action, we organized a workshop with Belgian, Norwegian and British fishing industry workers.

The 22nd March 2016 was a black day for Belgium. We are still in mourning for the victims of the Brussels attacks. But there are also signs of hope. We received solidarity messages from all over the world, from India to the USA.

One of the solidarity letters came from SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, that has members working in airports across the USA. On the day of the attacks, a strike was scheduled at ten airports across the United States. Instead, they held vigils and memorial gatherings at airports, in solidarity with their colleagues who work at Brussels Airport. It is good to see trade unions support each other in these difficult times. Thank you for all the solidarity!

A delegation of CSC Food and Services is in South-Africa for the training of domestic workers. 45 domestic workers of 15 African countries attend a three day training in Cape Town. On the first day our federation was presented and there was a training on negotiation skills. The group was very enthusiastic and eager to learn. We were happy to be able to share our experience from Belgium. To be continued!
