The making of MUST BE.

Tony Cragg is one of the most celebrated sculptors of his generation. For over five decades, the British artist has pushed the boundaries of sculpture, exploring the possibilities of material, movement and form.

A self-described “radical materialist,” works with materials ranging from bronze and steel to wood and glass, creating sculptures that appear to grow, twist and move somewhere between the natural and the manufactured.

Now at TheMerode, his monumental bronze sculpture MUST BE takes its place in the front courtyard, presented courtesy of the Artist and

Cast in bronze, MUST BE embodies this approach. Its twisting, overlapping forms appear almost elastic, creating a striking tension between the weight of the material and the sense of movement within it.

This film takes us behind the installation of MUST BE, from its arrival to its final presence in the courtyard.

Peter Lindbergh transformed fashion photography with a vision that became unmistakably his own. Through raw black-and-white imagery and a deeply human approach to portraiture, he created some of the most defining images of modern fashion photography.

Behind those images were moments like these.

Captured behind the scenes of his shoots, these archival glimpses reveal the movement, the silence, the exchanges and the atmosphere surrounding the creation of an image.

This September, Peter Lindbergh’s work comes to TheMerode.

Presented with in collaboration with his Foundation, PETER LINDBERGH. HORS-CHAMP brings together over 55 photographs, inviting us to look beyond the frame and discover what exists outside the image itself just like in this behind the scene.

On September 12, TheMerode joins RendezVous - Brussels Art Week for a full day dedicated to art, bringing together exhibitions, encounters, talks and live performances throughout the Club.

As part of TheMerode Art Day, discover David Shrigley, Works on Paper, an intimate selection of sixteen works by one of Britain’s most distinctive contemporary artists.

Known for his unmistakable visual language, Shrigley combines simple, almost naïve drawings with sharp observations and absurd humour, turning ordinary situations into moments that are witty, strange and often surprisingly profound.

Following his talk with Kendell Geers at TheMerode earlier this year, David Shrigley returns on September 12 for a walking breakfast marking the opening of Works on Paper, an opportunity to meet the artist and discover his work.

A new monumental presence has arrived yesterday at TheMerode.

We are proud to present MUST BE, a monumental sculpture by British artist Tony Cragg, whose practice has transformed our understanding of material, movement and form for more than five decades.

Cast in bronze, MUST BE twists and overlaps in seemingly fluid forms, creating a striking tension between the weight of the material and the sense of movement within it. Organic yet entirely imagined, the work appears to grow, shift and come alive.

One of the most influential figures in contemporary sculpture, Tony Cragg has exhibited internationally at institutions including Tate, Centre Pompidou, Museo Reina Sofía and the Musée du Louvre.

Model, actress, artist and writer Nine d’Urso joined us at TheMerode for an intimate creative workshop inspired by her book “Solution de Continuité” (Flammarion, 2025).

Known for her work in fashion and film, including Hors du Temps, Cristóbal Balenciaga and George: Untamed Spirit, Nine also explores the space between image, memory and storytelling through her artistic practice.

At the heart of Solution de continuité is a simple but deeply personal question: What in your life began but never reached its end?

From 240 responses, Nine created drawings and sealed them in glass vials, transforming unfinished stories into tangible fragments of memory.

At TheMerode, she invited our members to reflect on their own unfinished stories through a hands-on ritual of writing, drawing and sealing.

We sat down with Nine to talk about creativity, the stories we carry, and what it means to give the unfinished a form.

Join us for TheMerode Art Day.

On Saturday, September 12, TheMerode opens its doors to everyone, a day dedicated to contemporary art, creativity and connection.

For its second edition, expect exhibitions, performances, screenings and conversations across the Club, as part of RendezVous – Brussels Art Week and the opening of our new cultural season.

Because art is more than what we look at, it shifts perspective, and creates conversation.
