Curator, writer, and editor based in London, Francesca Gavin joined us at TheMerode as curator of our former in-house art exhibition The Third Perspective, a group exhibition inspired by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows.

Beyond our walls, she serves as Artistic Director of viennacontemporary and Editor-in-Chief of EPOCH, a magazine that bridges contemporary and historical art. Known for her sharp cultural insight and cross-disciplinary vision, Francesca continues to shape the way we see, and think about, art today.

This summer, she shares what’s sparking her imagination: books, places, and ideas worth lingering with.

We’re getting ready at The Merode! From crates to walls, the energy of more than 140 works from Belgium and Brazil is coming together.

Curated by Kathleen Weyts and Benedicte Goesaert, ENERGIA explores the vibrant flows connecting artists, stories, and cultures.

Stay tuned as we transform the space into an immersive dialogue linking two worlds.

After his thought-provoking talk last fall at TheMerode on keeping innovation human, tech journalist and UK founding editor David Rowan shares what’s fueling his future-forward summer. From ruthless reads on Silicon Valley’s blind spots to unexpected architectural gems and rebellious comedy, David’s summer list is anything but predictable. It’s a tech realist’s guide to finding joy and meaning in the chaos.

Here’s what’s on his radar:

BOOKS
• Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman
“I’m re-reading this classic in behavioral science by the Nobel-prizewinning economist in light of his own particular behavioural insight of a few months ago”

• More Everything Forever, Adam Becker
“A brutal takedown of our tech overlords”

• Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas, Natasha Dow Schüll
“A break down on how electronic slot machines play with human psychology to trap players in the “machine zone” and keep them hooked.”

MEDIA
• Stephen Colbert vs. Trump vs. Paramount.
“I’m also going to be spending the summer enjoying watching Stephen Colbert take on Trump and his own cowardly employers Paramount... though he may have been permanently silenced by the time you read this.”

DESTINATIONS
• Edinburgh Fringe Festival
“I take a group of around 40 people each year and work with local theatre people to choose six shows a day from the thousands on offer. A wonderful and intense cultural experience.”

• El Cabanyal, Valencia
“By the beach, where I’ve just undertaken a typically naive and foolish endeavour: to renovate a 100-year-old house (as a metaphor, imagine a giant bottomless hole in the ground, into which the renovator needs to keep throwing euros). But naive impulsiveness has served me fine as a startup tech investor”

• The TWA Terminal at JFK
“A futuristic design by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen that was instantly redundant on its 1962 opening because it couldn’t accommodate the new jumbo jet. Now it’s been restored magnificently as the TWA Hotel, restored in obsessive splendour including Saarinen’s original study and a 1960s living room.”

This weekend, we took TheMerode experience beyond our walls.

Our members were invited to the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit for an unforgettable day at the Belgian Grand Prix, where adrenaline met elegance.

From prime viewing seats overlooking the most thrilling corners of the track, including the iconic Raidillon, to capturing close-up moments of their favorite F1 cars, our members were immersed in the heart of the action.

The day was celebrated, naturally, with a glass of , our gracious host. A timeless toast to speed, style, and shared memories.

Earlier this month, TheMerode members were welcomed for a rare private tour in the studio of renowned Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck, a quiet, immersive space where sculpture, installation, and drawing converge in poetic dialogue.

From life-size grey figures to intimate reflections on time and memory, Op de Beeck’s work invites us to slow down and observe the beauty in silence. This exclusive visit offered a glimpse into the mind and making of a singular artistic voice.

Thank you for opening your studio to us!

Our last Community Drink of the season was nothing short of golden. With a Sun Club theme, members gathered under the July sun to sip rosé, share oysters and gelato, and unwind on the terrace with summer in full swing.

It was the perfect moment to connect and celebrate with TheMerode community before the annual summer closing.

Thank you for making this season unforgettable, we look forward to welcoming TheMerode members back at the next Community drink after the break!
