Juist !

This quote really made me stop.

And, honestly, I’m not sure I agree with Emerson.

Because does the kind of loss matter? Does the way we lose someone change what that loss does to us?

Death can be devastating, brutal even. It can leave an emptiness that no amount of philosophy can make sound “kind.” But I wonder if Emerson was getting at something slightly different: the finality of death.

There is something terribly painful, but also strangely definite, about death. There is no wondering if they will come back. No endless replaying of conversations. No asking whether you should have tried harder, loved better, called sooner. No ambiguity about where you stand with them.

And perhaps that is what makes death “kind” compared with some of the other ways we lose people.

Because some people leave while they are still alive.

They disappear into estrangement. They betray you. They abandon you. They become strangers. And you are left with a person who is still somewhere in the world, while the relationship you knew is gone. That kind of loss can be uniquely cruel because there is no funeral, no final goodbye, sometimes not even an explanation.

But then I think of suiclde, and Emerson’s words become much harder for me to accept.

How do you call a loss “kind” when it leaves behind so many unanswered questions? What did I miss? What could I have done? Why didn't they tell me? Why couldn't I see it? Could I have stopped it?

That grief doesn't simply ask you to mourn someone. Sometimes it asks you to live with questions that may never have answers.

So perhaps death is the kindest way to lose someone only in the sense that it gives loss a finality that other forms of loss don't.

But kind?

I’m still not convinced.

What do you guys think Emerson meant and do you agree with him?!!
