Bangladesh is a place of cultural activities, creative excellence and a variety of festivals. Rabindra Sharobar inside Dhanmondi Lake is a distinct hub of various cultural programmes. And many rush here if any such event takes place. This cultural function was also enjoyable.

The scenic lake covers almost 16% of Dhanmondi. It lies between Jigatola, Rifles Square, Kalabagan residential area (along Mirpur Road), Rassel Square, Road # 32 (Bangabandhu House), Road # 27 (New # 16) and Anam Plaza (Satmasjid Road). The lake is around 3 km long, 35 to 100m wide and 4.77m deep. Its total water body is 37.37 hectares. Interestingly, its water level is always flat as heavy rainfalls pour in the lake through drains.
Needless to mention, Dhanmondi was made as a residential area in 1956. The Lake’s source was the Kawran Bazar River which is now traceless. It was not all. The panoramic lake was linked to the Turag River which is still in existence but no link exists with the lake. It was also somehow attached with Bengunbari canal.

The lake was particularly developed for the elite inhabitants of Dhanmondi Residential Area.

Another charming fascination lies in the Chistia Palace (Jahaj Bari) of an exotic beauty. It lies on the bank near Medinova building. In the 1990s a local businessman built the palace. The most deplorable fact is that it is now under destruction for some probable enmity against its owner. Alas! The palace is still (demolition going on right now for a month) in the shape of a boat holding a manor house on it.

The lake is for sure a prevalent tourist sight as it larks along the lush and green vegetation. It streams like a heavenly serpent under various scenic trees. Its edges are carpeted for the sidewalks of the visitors and the exercisers both in the early mornings, afternoons and gleaming nights.

The wide spaces are unavoidably used by the players mostly in lieu of jogging. A number of crafty bridges have crossed different parts of the lake. Angling here is a tremendous paste-time for many. The apartments have developed a serene and peaceful relationship with the lake. Their roofs are the best for overviewing the spectacular lake peeping through the tall and handsome trees.

The boating! Simply a nectar ride.

Along its western bank lies the residence of Shekh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. His home is now a historic museum holding the remnants and memoirs of the brutal assassination in 1975.
