This is one of those moments that makes all the hours nobody sees worth it.
People see a DJ behind the decks making it look easy. They don’t see the endless hours digging through music, listening to tracks, building and organising libraries, setting hot cues and memory points, practising transitions and learning your collection inside out.
Because a great song isn’t necessarily the right song right now.
Play it at the right moment and the room erupts. Play it at the wrong moment and… nothing.
That’s reading a crowd. Push harder? Pull it back? Change genre? Change decade? Take a risk? Sometimes you have seconds to decide.
Give a good DJ some freedom and let them create the journey. You might hear something you’d forgotten, discover something completely new, or find yourself loving a track you never knew you wanted.
And yes, I love requests. Tell me what you love it helps me understand you. But it might not be the next track. I might hold it until the moment it makes sense.
When the floor is pumping and everyone is jumping, sometimes it’s best to give your DJ some space, hold on and enjoy the ride.
Nothing is off the table. Old, new, commercial, obscure if it’s good music and it’s right for that moment, play it.
They made me feel like a superstar that night.
But looking out from behind the decks?
They were the superstars.
