It might surprise you to know that cake decorating isn't all sugar and spice. Sometimes we have to delve into the hardware department and we have some really snazzy tools.
This is one of my favourites. A styrofoam cutter. Much quicker and cleaner than using a knife.
I can't wait to show you what all this mess will be turned into.

I love that I get to make anniversary cakes for some of my clients.
10 years ago, theirs was the first wedding cake I ever made. Last weekend I helped them celebrate their 10th anniversary.

As SE Qld battens down and prepares for it's first cyclone in many, many years, (not something I thought I'd see again) my hope is that everyone stays safe but remembers to be prepared not alarmed.
I grew up on the Atherton Tablelands in Far Nth Qld and saw more cyclones than I can remember. Some notable ones being Alan in 1974 (spent on a boat), Winifred in 1986, Joy in 1990 (fun and games living in an old farmhouse with a 6 week old, premature baby) and lastly, Larry in 2006 just before I moved to SE Qld.
Larry was a Cat 5 and my family was in the direct line of it. We lost power at 6am on the Monday, town water at midday Tuesday and all phone service sometime on Wednesday. A tree hit our house and we watched as the glass in the windows visibly flexed and water blew over the top of the windows into the house. Thankfully, we had a gas cooktop and water tank, so I was able to cook food as it defrosted in the freezer (I had 2 and the other one never got opened even once -and everything stayed frozen), fill toilets to be flushed, heat water for bathing. I cooked food and shared with less fortunate neighbours. We were lucky to get power and water back on by Friday pm that same week. There were some without power for months.

Anyway, back to the current situation. Some tips for preparation - fuel your car and put it undercover, secure all loose items outside your home, make sure you have provisions for pets, fill containers now and put in your freezer, fill other containers with water, fill your bathtub with water, fill bins with water to stop them blowing away, secure trampolines. Ensure you have a supply of batteries, torches, candles, drinking water, tinned food, first aid supplies, medications, a battery operated radio to keep up to date with storm warnings and other important information, a way to cook food, fuel for generator if you have one, secure all important documents (maybe even scan them to a USB), have good footwear to wear outside later, and some cash on hand.
During the cyclone, open a window on the "other" side of the house to the wind direction to lower the pressure in your home. When the wind changes direction (after the eye passes over), close it and open one on the opposite side.
Do NOT go outside during the eye of the cyclone, the wind will come back and in the opposite direction. Afterwards, be careful of fallen powerlines. Do NOT enter flood water. If you think you may need to evacuate to higher land, do it sooner rather than later.

Please remember (and I know this comes too late for many) don't stock up on milk and bread and other perishables, because if the power goes out, you can't keep them anyway. And you won't need more toilet paper than normal. Check on your neighbours and show kindness to everyone. God Bless.

I remember being as child, designing my birthday cakes that my Grandmother would then make. So it gives me the greatest joy to be able to do that for my own Grandchildren.
AND I even get to have a piece of those cakes too.
Cherry Ripe chocolate mud cake filled with decadently creamy coconut flavoured whipped ganache. Decorated with moulded flower and butterflies and hand crafted other decorations.
Happy Birthday my precious one.

Businesses exist with new clients, but thrive with repeat clients (and I have some of the best). Especially when they travel long distance to collect their cakes. Thanks Matt and Jess.
Happy 1st Birthday Olivia. I had so much fun creating your cake. Everything on the cake is edible and inside is strawberry swirl white chocolate mud cake filled with layers of swiss meringue buttercream.

Wow, one month of the year gone already. February is going to be pretty busy. Then in a blink it will be December.

At the moment I have only 6 of the Dennis Collection left for preorder. After that you will have to take your chances that there may be more available. Sincere thanks to everyone who has paid their deposit.

I've had a few requests for my Christmas Dessert boxes, so I will be offering a very limited number of these - they are very labour intensive. Again, by preorder in either a box of 4 or 6.

Thank you for your support. 🥰

Oh my goodness, can you believe it. What started out as a dream a little under 11 years ago has culminated into this. 10 years since Maydennison Cakes and Crafts "opened the doors" for business.

Along the way I've won Champion Contemporary Cake at the EKKA twice, Champion Contemporary Cake at the Royal Toowoomba Show 4 times and Overall Champion once (this last award has only been in existence for 3 years and I didn't enter 2 of those years).

I've made countless wedding, birthday, graduation, anniversary, engagement, baby shower, Christmas and other celebration cakes. Many of my clients become repeat clients - coming back time and again for whatever celebration needs a cake.

2 years ago, I introduced the Dennis Collection and have been blown away by how popular it has become. Many people now order 2 or even 3 of them. Dennis would be so proud of that one.

So, I want to take this opportunity to thank -firstly my friend and mentor Mary Reid for her ongoing support and guidance. My family and friends who have been neglected for so long (sorry I can't be there because I have a cake to deliver that day). My family and friends who have assisted with deliveries (oh the stories that we could tell). Fellow wedding vendors for their recommendations - and orders. And finally my wonderful clients, because without you, I would not have been able to make it this far. Bless you all.

Thanks to everyone who has already placed an order.

Now that we have Christmas and New Years celebrations out of the way, I am busy soaking dozens of kg's of dried fruit and alcohol for this years DC cakes.
Last year I made 30 and could honestly have sold an extra 10. So please be sure to preorder.
I sold off the one I was keeping for myself in 2023 and I didn't repeat that mistake in 2024. And I can promise I won't be doing it this year either - yum, yum, yum, yum, yum.
As I say, these are limited due to the amount of time that the fruit soaks, so get those orders in before the end of January please.
Oh, and if you've already ordered, please be sure to pay your deposit (let me know if you need my bank details). Final payments will be required before 1st December. Thank you.

As we farewell another year, I can't say I'm sad to see this one go. It has been a year of change and endurance.
I've seen and experienced many highs and lows but let's concentrate on the highs as I share with you, the Cakes of 2024.

Going forward, I wish everyone my heartfelt prayers for good health and happiness. I thank you all for your support in the various ways you gave it. I will be doing fewer cakes in 2025 as I return to some craft passions and spend more time with my family. I am not sure about much else at this moment in time because tomorrow isn't guaranteed. May God bless you.

Anyone for hot chocolate?
Thank you Toowoomba Healing Hands for once again choosing me to create the cakes for you to distribute.
These are 5" traditional fruit cakes and every element on them is edible - image, handle, chocolate and marshmallows on top.

Before things get too crazy around here with Christmas cooking, I would like to wish you and yours a very safe and happy Christmas. I know for some it will not be the best of times (and I totally understand), so sending you love and prayers to get you through.

Just a few Christmas and Dennis Collection cakes still to be collected. Meanwhile I'm cutting up 2 of the Dennis Collection to share with family and finally getting my first taste.... oh my goodness!!!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to share pics of the cake I recently made for my beautiful Granddaughter and her best friend's joint party.
