People often ask why I talk about wedding season - and why it’s such a big deal…
Here’s why!
I shoot 10–15 weddings in a 2-month blur, then edit for months before doing it all over again. My body goes from sitting for 3 months straight at a computer to carrying 10kg of gear for 10 hours, squatting/laying/crouching in all types of weird positions for the “the shot” and my body does not transition gracefully 😅 (shout out to my beautiful little niece who gives the BEST shoulder rubs - seriously, it’s HEAVEN!)

Thankfully, the stamina comes back fast and by wedding 4 of the season, I’m smashing out double headers and backing up for a family session on the Sunday (I’ll still take a post wedding bliss should rub though 😉)

“Well why don’t you shoot weddings all year round??” This would definitely solve the fitness element, however I can’t sustain the editing side of weddings 52 weeks a year, and raise my 4 babies. Most of all, having the “break” keeps me loving what I do. If I shot 100 weddings a year - I honestly don’t think would love them like I do now (even 10 years on!)

I’m mentally prepared to walk into literally anything when I arrive to photograph the groom on his wedding day. But today I was pleasantly surprised to walk in and see one very talented groomsman casually playing the piano (def wasn’t expecting that!) He swears he hasn’t played in years… I call BS!

So, what led me to being so surprised by a guy playing a piano at prep?
(“What happened to you, Nicole?”)

My groom prep baptism of fire came early, and in the form of Toben Mooney from Cobar 🤭 First as a groomsman about 9-10 years ago, then again a couple of years later. And he’s been a guest at many weddings in between!

This man doesn’t just turn up to weddings and enjoy the entertainment… he IS the entertainment (sprinkling absolute chaos everywhere he goes). If literally anyone else on earth did what he did, I’d be horrified (and possibly call the police) - but because I know Toben and his WILD ways (respectful+kind always), I can’t help but encourage his antics and rev him up even more 🤭

So go on - take a wild guess. What do you think I walked in on that very first day? (Wrong answers only encouraged 👀👇)

Ps any photographers out there wanting to dip their toe into wedding photography… I highly recommend a Toben Mooney, VIP experience - straight up. It will prepare you for absolutely anything the industry is prepared to throw at you 😅 (but don’t call the police - we love Toben - with or without clothes 🤭)

Without a doubt, this is the WORST section of my lawn… the main culprit is the one that nearly went through the fence (again) 🫣

But it won’t look like this for long 💪🏻 (or maybe it will because I’m only 1 wedding deep into the season - gotta love an unrealistic goal though)

✅ Yes - I’m keeping the dog!
❌ No, I’m not hiring a professional… (even though I should)
🤩 I’ll be doing exactly what ChatGBT told me to do (it literally gave me a 3 month lawn rehab program to follow 😎)

Pray I stay interested (this could go either way)!

LIGHTING 👇🏻

When choosing a wedding venue, my ONLY advice is, to pick one that has REALLY good lighting! Lighting even trumps styling aesthetics! Or better yet, do both like 🤩

This beautiful venue ticks alllllll the boxes. Not only is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, but from a lighting perspective - they have nailed it!

- The accommodation is filled with beautiful, natural light.
- The ceremony location is full sun - not half shade with dappled light. Bonus if it’s overcast, but you should always plan for full sun.
- Loads of dense shade for early portraits (super important in daylight savings).
- The cherry on top - the incredible views at sunset 🙀🤩
- The indoor/outdoor reception area makes it a perfect wedding venue! Lighting ✅ Views ✅✅ Vibe ✅✅✅

BUT let’s be real…
It’s actually “golden 10 minutes” and “blue ten minutes” (hour sounds better though, right!)! Ohhhhh how I wish I had a whole hour of both 😭😍

If I had to choose my FAVOURITE lighting scenario, it would have to be the below, LIGHTING TRIFECTA 🤩🤩🤩

☁️ overcast all day
🌅 golden light for the last 15 minutes
🔹 15 minutes of “blue hour” 🤩🤩🤩

Ten years deep into photography, and you will still hear me squealing with excitement when I score a trifecta!!

We came, we conquered, and we all left like we just did a 2 hour cross fit class together! The energy required to keep 3 kids under 3, entertained, happy, cooperating, AND in the one spot is no easy feat… and we smashed it!! it’s a team effort, and these two legends went all out to help me make their babies laugh 😍

At home with the Foran family + their newest little love 😍

After 10 years of weddings, many do tend to blur together. But Katie & Luke’s wedding, is up there with one of the most memorable.

Highlights include:
- Katie’s beautiful, happy smile, that never left her face the entire day (even though it rained for the majority of their wedding).
- Their hilarious MC’s. Hands down the funniest performance (I’ve since seen a few versions of their air craft simulation - but these guys were by far the funniest).
- My first taste of fireball, shared with Katie & Luke after we smashed out their wedding portraits - in the only 45 minute break of rain for the day! (and it’s gooooood)

Since their beautiful wedding, I have photographed their two beautiful babies, Katie’s happy smile and Luke’s super happy go lucky persona. Sadly, I’m yet to drink fireball with them again (maybe next time).
