A wedding guest made a comment recently about how well-paid celebrants are for doing “just a few hours work”. While it is true, we might only be there for a couple of hours on the wedding day, that is only a small fraction of job.
For most couples, I will spend more than 20 hours before the big day meeting with them, preparing legal documents, writing and refining their ceremony, rehearsing with the couple and by myself at home, getting myself ready and making sure I have everything I need including a charged-up PA system and signing table if required. That is all on top of the work it takes to run a business, promote my services and complete my compulsory professional development.
There is so much more work involved in being a celebrant than most people realise, but I guess it is a compliment that we make it look so effortless.
