SIGNAL// +SYNTHESIS:
An exploration of sound, texture, and communication.

The Lab at ILA present the ethereal sounds of Italian / USA group PASSEPARTOUT DUO.

Comprised of pianist Nicoletta Favari and percussionist Christopher Salvito, PASSEPARTOUT DUO have spent the last 10 years expanding their unconventional creative process, presenting work to great acclaim on a near-continuous global tour.

Perhaps best known for their evolving ecosystem of handmade instruments, including the Chromaplane, the duos collaborative output ranges from analogue electronic circuits and conventional percussion to room-size textile installations utilising found objects and unique performance spaces.

Supported by a series of sound and sculptural performances housed in a large-scale installation from HARI KOUTLAKIS and JOE F, each work will explore queries of communication, oscillating between ambient and discordant, contemplative and overloaded.

Full lineup:
PASSEPARTOUT DUO [ambient polyrhythmic synthesis] [Italy / USA]
SEBASTIAN VIVIAN & WELLNESS CENTRE [ambient electronic - debut collaboration]
ANONAME & LEWIS GODWIN [sound, sculpture and bodily fluids - debut collaboration]
+
HARI KOUTLAKIS + JOE F [stage design and lighting]

Friday 9 May | 7:30pm – 11pm

PASSEPARTOUT DUO will present a free artist talk on Thursday the 8th to discuss their creative approach and development of the Chromaplane as part of Lab Rats, before their performance Friday 9th.

A limited amount of discounted early bird tickets are available now via the link in our bio.

SUPERSONIC @ THE LAB [ILLUMINATE ADELAIDE]
Tiny Hole Inside me

Building on a burgeoning cross-media collaboration that has included appearances at Soft Centre and Make It Up Club, performance/video artist Andrea Illes and musician Marcus Whale present a new three-hour performance created for The Lab's unique space — unfolding across sound, dance and live-feed video.

Supported by ILA, the Australian premiere of this three-hour sound and movement piece will include solo, collaborative and interactive sections — exploring impossible perfection, bodily failure and surveillance, with inspiration from Greek mythology.

Sat 19 July
7:30pm-10:30pm
Tickets from $20

Please note: This performance contains nudity and is 18+.

ADELAIDE JAZZ FESTIVAL AT THE LAB:
LYNCHIAN ART-JAZZ BY DJAWBREAKER + RYAN SAHB [VISUALS]

Known for his unforgettable use of music and sound in film and television, David Lynch’s haunting, twisted worlds come alive in this immersive performance from Kaurna Yerta jazz-rock group Djawbreaker. Experience a sonic journey deep into the eerie and the sublime, paired with visuals by Ryan Sahb across The Lab’s LED screens.

Emerging in 2021 with a bold jazz-rock sound shaped by improvisation, Djawbreaker blends the raw and the cinematic with voice, synth, guitar, bass, and drums. This special performance sees the ensemble draw inspiration from the world of Lynch—creating original music while pushing boundaries and leaning towards the future of experimental jazz.

Featuring:
Chelsea Lee – voice, synth
Django Rowe – guitar
Dylan Paul – bass
Stephen Neville – drums

Visuals: RYAN SAHB
Ryan’s digital artwork incorporates various elements of video feedback, synthesis, and bent composite signals, with an elaborate signal chain of modified analogue and digital equipment that ranges from three to thirty years old.
