People often ask me how I got started in photography.
My kids is what got me started. When I had my first born, nearly 18 years ago now (wow!), I wanted to saviour every single moment of him being little and growing up. I wanted to hold onto those moments forever.
Photography back then was less easy to access and far more expensive. We were in the digital age yet still only able to purchase prints with most photographers. I spent so many $$$ on photographers every few months because I saw the value in freezing these moments in time. And I'm so glad I did, don't regret it for a second.
When my daughter was born a couple of years later, I decided that I was going to take some of the money I would have invested in photography and spend it on buying myself a camera. I was fortunate to be able to have the time at home with both of my kids. I spent my days moving my daughter around in a basket in my garden playing with different light and settings. I'd take my kids to the park and just capture them playing. The camera and kids never left my side. I have documented their whole lives. My favourite thing to capture then and still is today is two things...
1. Their true authentic joy.
2. Connections- I loved to capture their connection with each other and the connection they had with their dad. (Like most mums, I have the most gorgeous photos of them with their dad, and the photos that I have with the kids are a phone camera roll full of bad quality selfies)
It snowballed from there... I had friends wanting me to photographing their kids and a lovely local photographer reached out to me wanting me to assist with wedding photography.
I was a self taught, you tube student, so was lacking the self belief I could actually become a professional photographer, so I went to TAFE you get myself a piece of paper. To be honest, I didn't learn many more technical skills than I didn't already learn from Youtube... but I met other creatives who forced me to step outside of what I usually photograph which was invaluable.
I have so many photos of my kids growing up and they are my favourite thing to look at. When I look at them it takes me back to how life was in those moments. How the giggled, how the hugged, how simple life was, the people in our lives in those moments, sometimes the tantrums and sleepless nights. Without those memories captured I'm not sure I would be able to remember all those moments so clearly to be honest.
I want to do the same for others and document your most precious memories so you too can freeze those moments in time.
