When and How to Prune Hydrangeas for Abundant Blooms
When to Prune by Type:
Bigleaf (Hydrangea macrophylla)
– Prune after blooming in late summer, as it flowers on old wood.
Panicle (Hydrangea paniculata)
– Prune in late winter or early spring; blooms on new wood.
Oakleaf (Hydrangea quercifolia)
– Prune after flowering in summer; blooms on old wood.
Smooth (Hydrangea arborescens)
– Prune in late winter or early spring; blooms on new wood.
How to Prune:
Remove any dead or damaged stems.
Thin older branches to improve air circulation.
Cut back healthy stems by about one-third to encourage stronger growth.
With the right timing and technique, each type of hydrangea will reward you with lush, vibrant blooms season after season.
