Today we celebrate Mabo day

Torres Strait Island Regional Council

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗯𝗼 𝗗𝗮𝘆!

30 years ago on 3 June 1992 the High Court handed down its landmark decision in the Mabo case, overturning the legal fiction of terra nullius which had characterised Australian law regarding land and title since 1770.

On Mabo Day we commemorate Eddie Koiki Mabo (29 June 1936–21 January 1992) from our Mer Community and his fellow claimants, whose campaign for Indigenous land rights led to this decision.

🏛 The 1992 Mabo High Court decision acknowledged the prior and enduring rights to land of the First Peoples and led to Native Title. The Mabo decision was monumental for Indigenous Australians, and a significant time and place in Australia's history.
