{Koala cake raises cash for charity in virtual raffle}

AN INCREDIBLE koala cake intended for a now-cancelled event has raised cash for a Toowoomba charity through a virtual raffle.

Cake artist Sarah Cerqui's bushfire cake was supposed to be raffled off at the launch of a new book by Merivale Cakes and Crafts last week at the Burke and Wills Hotel.

Money from the raffle would go to Blush Cancer Care.

The design, made out of Belgian chocolate, white chocolate and design sugar, featured two koalas hanging from a tree while a fire raged nearby, with a base in the shape of Australia.

But Ms Cerqui said the cake needed rescuing after the event was cancelled and the hotel informed her it was shutting down its kitchens due to restrictions placed on it amid the coronavirus outbreak.

"I delivered it to the Burke and Wills, and then I was notified there would be 200 people at the night, then everything went crazy and the event was cancelled," she said.

"I got a call from the Burke and Wills who said they would close and the cake needed to be picked up."

To make sure the cake was put to use, event coordinator Mary Reid decided to hold a virtual raffle on Monday to ensure Blush received proceeds.

Ms Reid said Mayor Paul Antonio phoned in and picked a number at random to decide the winner.

More than $800 was raised for Blush, much to the delight of committee member Lisa McDonald.

Ms Cerqui said it was a bright spot in what had been a difficult period.

"All my cake orders have been cancelled, same as everyone," she said.

"This has all happened in such a short amount of time.

"We've still got to be Australian and smile through all this."

The winning woman will be putting the cake to good use, with her husband reportedly celebrating his 50th birthday soon.
