In 1968, Joe Cocker wasn’t a household name — not yet. He was just a lad from Sheffield with a voice that didn’t sound like anyone else. Rough, raspy, and full of soul, it felt too big for the small clubs he was playing. But that year, everything changed.

Joe had just recorded a cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends.” And while many were skeptical — how could anyone top the original? — Joe didn’t try to top it. He transformed it. Slowed it down. Let it burn. Let it bleed. His voice didn’t merely sing the lyrics; it lived them. When that song hit the airwaves in late 1968, listeners stopped what they were doing and listened.

That performance became his calling card — raw, vulnerable, explosive. Backed by the soulful guitar work of Jimmy Page (yes, that Jimmy Page, just before Led Zeppelin), Joe made the song his own. Even Paul McCartney later said Joe’s version brought new life to the track. That’s rare praise — and well deserved.

But Joe in 1968 was more than just a song. He was a movement of one. While the British music scene was bursting with polished pop and psychedelic experimentation, Joe came in like a storm: scruffy, bluesy, unrefined — and unforgettable. He was deeply influenced by Ray Charles, by American R&B, but his sound had something uniquely British — a working-class grit, a kind of pain that couldn’t be polished out.

That year, his live performances were gaining traction. Whether in London clubs or small halls across England, people were starting to talk. Who was this guy? Why did he sing like that? And why couldn’t they stop listening?

Joe didn’t fit the mold. And he didn’t need to. 1968 was the year he stepped into the spotlight — not with flash, but with feeling. And that made all the difference.

Joe Cocker wasn’t made by the industry. He was made by the music. And in 1968, the UK got its first real taste of what would become one of its most soulful exports.

Thanks Mick, this is gold.

Been a pretty weird day today... First off, I found a hat full of money.
Then I got chased by an angry man with a guitar.

In Taree this morning and saw all this out front of Bass And Blues Megastore.
Like many businesses in Taree, they got flooded and look like they’ve got plenty of awesome volunteers helping to get cleaned up.
I figured all the equipment would’ve been wet but thought I might be able to rescue some…..unfortunately insurance won’t allow it to be used again, for obvious reasons and it’s all about to be picked up and crushed.
Naturally I did try talk my way into a couple of speakers to no avail.
Fair enough too.

This is me too.Great story behind the nickname
