Small business in Australia is facing a very different marketing landscape in 2026.

Customers are changing how they search, compare and choose businesses. ChatGPT Ads, AI search, better marketing measurement, more automation and stronger reputation signals are already changing the game.

The opportunity is clear: use better tools to improve your marketing, understand what is working and make smarter decisions.

But if your business lacks strategy, structure, systems and clarity, technology alone won’t fix it.

If you want to grow your business with strategy, start with the foundation first.

A strong marketing strategy helps you decide what to use, what to ignore and where to invest.

Comment "QUIZ ME" and I’ll send you my 5-minute Marketing Quiz to learn if you're nailing your foundations or still need to work on the foundations of the business to have a better marketing strategy.

Remember: strategy first, then we work on the tactics.

"Artificial intelligence is THE SAVIOUR for my marketing struggles." Is that right?

AI will absolutely optimise operations and prove its efficiency, but it cannot solve foundational business problems that you don't even know how to answer yourself. And I say that with care.

If you are relying on AI to build your business plan with no human brain challenging it, you are fast-tracking your way to becoming a soulless, robotic brand lost in a red ocean.

Especially when people are craving connection and the human touch. No one likes a robot making decisions on things that require genuine human interaction.

The data on rushing into automation without a plan is brutal. Let's look at the numbers:

🔥 Strategic Misalignment: The RAND Corporation recently found that over 80% of AI projects fail to deliver business value. The number one reason? Leadership misunderstands the problem. Small businesses are buying AI tools out of "FOMO" rather than tying the technology to a specific, measurable bottleneck.

🔥 The 95% Illusion: A recent MIT report revealed that 95% of corporate generative AI pilots deliver absolutely zero measurable impact on profit and loss. Companies are chasing shiny marketing generators instead of fixing their underlying workflows.

🔥 Garbage In, Garbage Out: AI requires pristine context to make accurate decisions. According to Cisco’s AI Readiness Index, only 13% of organisations have their data organised well enough to actually deploy AI. If your customer data is messy, your AI outputs will be unreliable.

🔥 The Intellectual Property Trap: Forbes highlights a massive legal blind spot for SMBs: content generated entirely by AI cannot currently be copyrighted. You risk generating brand assets and copy that competitors can legally steal, or inadvertently publishing AI outputs that infringe on existing trademarks.

The technology works wonders when you already have clean data, clear goals, and a human-led plan to follow.

If you are struggling with marketing, start by defining your distinct market position, understanding your audience's pain points and creating a clear strategy.

Restaurant marketing strategy, learned from hundreds of restaurants around the world + my sharper marketer eye to recognise a company with clear strategy, structure and system.

This is Ben, my husband, and he is a foodie.
Over the last four years we have eaten our way through hundreds of restaurants, from tiny neighbourhood spots to the ones with a six month waiting list.

The places we still talk about were never the most expensive. They were running a strategy, even if they never called it that.

Here are 11 things every one of our favourites had in common, and every one of them works for a restaurant, cafe or bar in Sydney.

Save this and go through it with your team on your next quiet shift.

Which one is your venue missing? Tell me in the comments.

If I owned a restaurant, these are the 10 marketing things I would fix first.

1. Make Instagram explain the restaurant immediately. What do you serve? Who is it for? What is the atmosphere? Beautiful food photos are not enough if people don’t understand the experience.

2. Make booking part of the customer experience. Use the form to collect useful information: birthdays, anniversaries, dietary requirements and preferred seating.

3. Use the booking confirmation to build anticipation. Share the special of the day, parking info, signature dishes, pre-order options or live music.

4. Remove friction before the visit. Make the menu, prices, opening hours, booking link, dietary options, location and parking easy to find.

5. Give people a reason to visit now. Pasta night, live music, family lunch or a seasonal menu. Not every offer needs a discount.

6. Train staff to use customer information. If someone mentioned a birthday when booking, don’t ask again. Say, “Happy birthday, Ben. We saved this table for you.”

7. Create intentional moments of surprise. A complimentary drink, a small dessert, remembering a regular’s favourite order or a thoughtful welcome back.

8. Use your CRM as a memory system. Favourite table, favourite w**e, dietary preferences, anniversary, business lunch. Treat regulars like regulars.

9. Build a second-visit strategy. Follow up, say thank you and give people a reason to return within 30 days, especially on quieter days.

10. Ask for reviews and referrals at the right moment. When a customer says, “That was amazing,” make it easy to leave a review with a QR code or follow-up message.

That is marketing too.

Discovery → consideration → booking → arrival → experience → follow-up → retention → referral.

Marketing doesn’t stop at the door. Sometimes the biggest growth opportunity is making people feel so well treated that they come back, bring someone with them and talk about it.

A bigger marketing budget will not solve an unclear strategy.

Many small business owners hire a digital marketing agency hoping it will provide the direction, positioning and answers their business is missing.

But an agency can only work effectively when it understands:
- Who your ideal customer is
- What makes your offer valuable
- What your business is trying to achieve
- Which numbers matter
- What success should realistically look like

You do not need to become a digital marketing expert.

But you should understand enough to ask better questions, set clear expectations and recognise whether your investment is helping the business move forward.

A good agency should give you greater clarity, not greater confusion.

Before increasing your marketing spend, make sure the foundations are strong enough to support it.

Thinking of hiring a digital marketing agency? Before you sign another contract, make sure your business is ready to brief, measure and manage the work.

A good agency can amplify a clear strategy.

It cannot manufacture clarity from an undefined customer, a confusing offer, inconsistent messaging and disconnected data.

Before investing more in digital marketing, make sure you can answer these five questions:

1 - Who exactly are we trying to reach?
2 - Why should customers choose us?
3 - Can someone quickly understand what we offer?
4 - Do we know our sales, conversion and customer numbers?
5 - Do we retain access to our accounts, data and digital assets?

You do not need to become a digital marketing specialist.

But as a business owner, you should understand enough to set clear expectations, ask better questions and recognise whether the work is moving your business forward.

An agency should support your growth, not keep you in the dark.

If you don’t know where your leads are coming from, you are guessing with your marketing budget.

A strong marketing funnel helps you understand:

Where your leads come from.
Which channel is working.
What message is converting.
Where the sales process is breaking.
What needs to be improved.

Performance marketing is not just about getting more leads.

It is about building a system that attracts, tracks, qualifies and converts the right-fit clients.

More leads do not fix a broken structure.

Better systems do.

Performance marketing won’t sell for you. It creates demand.

But after the lead comes in, your process needs to do the work.

For service businesses, this is where many campaigns lose money.

Not because the ads are always bad. But because the lead has nowhere strong to land, nobody responds fast enough, the follow-up is weak, or the sales process is not clear.

A strong performance marketing process needs:

• A clear offer
• A strong landing page
• Fast follow-up
• Lead qualification
• Pre-sale nurturing
• A proper sales conversation
• Clear conversion tracking

This is where Speed to Lead matters. The faster you respond, the warmer the lead stays.

But speed alone is not enough.

You also need to qualify the lead, understand the problem, build trust and make sure they are the right fit.

Performance marketing should not stop at lead generation.

The real result comes from the full system:

Attract → Capture → Respond → Qualify → Warm Up → Convert → Optimise

More leads do not fix a broken process.

Better systems do.

Saying an agency but not seeing results?

The problem may not be the agency.

It may be the missing strategy behind the work.

Most agencies are hired to execute:
Posts.
Ads.
Emails.
SEO.
Campaigns.

But ex*****on only works when the direction is clear.

Before you outsource more marketing, define your ideal customer, offer, message, success metrics and who owns the decisions.

That is how you stop wasting money and start making your agency work better.
