Saturday question for you...

When you walk into a room, what's the first thing that makes you feel welcome?

For me, it starts with the candles. You'll often find me lighting them before anyone arrives.

Tell me yours in the comments.

Have you ever noticed there are always three kinds of guests who come over for dinner?

The lifesaver, who calls on the way to see if you need bread, ice... maybe Panadol. The one who brings a beautiful dessert that needs 40 minutes in the oven I'm using for the lamb. And the one who arrives thinking she's booked a five-star restaurant.

Darling, I'm the hostess, not your waitress!

Which one are you? Be honest.

Tell me I'm wrong... your first event for 2027 starts at 7:30am, the coffee's pretty average, there's a mini croissant and a PowerPoint with about 540 slides.

Do you actually enjoy going to those events?

Mix it up a little. Make it interactive, make it enjoyable, make it worth getting up at the crack of dawn for. Because if everyone's on their phone during your presentation, they're trying to tell you something.

You can call it team building... I like to call it family building.

If you're already planning your 2027 events, you're on the right track. Before you book anything, think about what each one is for.

A client event to say thank you. A little get-together for your referral partners, so they can meet and pass work to each other. Or my favourite right now: a day off-site for your team to kick off 2027 together.

What's the one event you're definitely doing next year?

Your team's just flown in for the 2027 kickoff... and you've booked them a meeting?

Don't plan a meeting for the first night. Let them settle in, have a drink, catch up and have dinner together. Start the work in the morning.

You'll notice the difference in the vibe and their motivation.

What does your team's first night usually look like?

Every event I go to, there's a welcome speech... and it always starts right as the food comes out.

Plates clinking, waiters moving around the table, and nobody's really listening to the person on the microphone.

Wait five minutes. Let everyone get served, then start. You'll have everyone's attention, and your message actually gets heard.

Have you noticed this at events too?

Hosting dinner at home and never getting the chance to sit down and eat?

Every time I have guests over, I'm so busy making sure the food's out on time and everyone's got enough to eat and drink that by the time I finally sit down, I'm not even hungry anymore.

Last weekend I tried something that actually worked. I gave one guest a really simple job: keep everyone's glass full, mine included. One less thing to stress about.

Sometimes all you have to do is ask for help. Your guests just want to feel at home.

Is it just me, or do you do this too?

What a week! Planning next year's corporate events and client dinners has well and truly started, and I got to spend time with some beautiful people along the way.
How was your week?

What do you wear to a casual Christmas BBQ?

When I'm the one hosting, casual means comfortable, not couldn't-be-bothered... your Christmas BBQ outfit can be relaxed and still look like you made an effort. And it's the one event where the Christmas earrings actually belong.

Already thinking about next year's events? I'd love to hear what you've got in mind. Send me a message.

What's actually appropriate to wear to the work Christmas party?

I write the dress codes for the events I host, so I can tell you what the host is really hoping for... it's a party, but it's still work. One question sorts out every outfit doubt, and it's in this video.

Hosting something for your team or your clients next year? That's the conversation I'm having right now. Send me a message.
