From his new local fave acts to the YouTube channel and fantasy series he turns to for beauty, grounding, and escapism, Russ shows why he’s both a pillar of the community and the creator of some of the warmest, most embodied dance music around.

"Old school, the whole set filmed on Handicam, I think a pretty new band, great sound, great commitment. I want some more of this in my life, I think."

Are you keen to talk about it? SydneyMusic.net co-founders Joe Hardy and Caitlin Welsh are making themselves available for a limited number of conversations about what they’ve learned maintaining Sydney’s most comprehensive gig guide.

We will come to your team meeting, organisation. collective, community group or venue and take you through the data we've collected and analysed on Sydney's underground... along with some conversation starters about what might be behind the major shifts that we're seeing today in how creativity is platformed.

Fee is a pay-what-you-can donation to SydneyMusic.net.

SydneyMusic is in its 165th week of operation, and every week is made possible thanks to our amazing community of supporters.

We know that the gig guide gets more people out to shows: our audience is growing every month, and 78% of 194 surveyed readers in February tell us that they see more live music because of the guide. Even more of our users (80%) say that the guide helps them discover new music too.

We consider this resource to be addressing a critical gap. We created it because we needed it. We’re powered purely by private donations – we’ve never received government grants or industry support (and yes, we’ve asked!).

60 hours a week go into maintaining the guide.

About Instagram (and websites)

I’m constantly surprised by how many of our wonderful Gig Guide readers don’t know we have a website. We created SydneyMusic.net so you don’t need social media to find gigs.

We strongly believe that musicians shouldn't need to be social media content creators to have people discover and engage with their work.

We also strongly believe that gig goers shouldn’t need to spend hours on Instagram every week to stay connected with what shows are happening.

Ironically, every time we link to our website from our Stories, Instagram immediately limits our reach.

Do you want your primary source of access to culture to be a platform that can arbitrarily limit who sees information, completely at their own discretion and without transparency?

I encourage you to try using the SydneyMusic.net gig guide the way we designed it.

Our Instagram Stories exist because we need to be where the punters are, but this is actually the least accessible way to read the guide.

SydneyMusic.net is designed for you to get in and out as fast as you need: everything happening across Greater Sydney in one simple page.

You can do it right now:

1. Open SydneyMusic.net
2. Bookmark it
3. Use it whenever you need

No ads, no algorithms, no s**t!

We've made it to 3 years old! We're incredibly grateful to have reached this milestone, and we couldn't have done it without the support of our community. THANK YOU.

SydneyMusic.net co-founder Joe Hardy has written some reflections, with some observations on the current state of our music community and the music industry. Link in bio.

Welcome to Buy Some Music! It's the first of a few new regular reads brought to you by the financial support of the SydneyMusic.net community.

It's pretty straightforward: we think most people need to actually buy more of the music they listen to, so we get some cool people with great taste to tell you about some music you should buy.

This time around, we've gone straight to the source: the friendly staff at your local record store are treasuries of taste, repositories of rare lore, the frontline workers helping out everyone from shy teenagers in Deftones shirts to local old-timers just in for a chat.

Consider buying one of these sublime recordings from one of these fine establishments:

• / VERSE Records, Dee Why
• .records, Ashfield
• Records, Parramatta
• , CBD
• , Leichhardt
• , Newtown
• , Surry Hills
• , Forest Lodge
• , Marrickville
