It’s the end of an era for me!!

About 6 months ago, I realised that 10 years is enough (for me) so this is my last day as owner of Hayfever Flowers.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to create and design beautiful and meaningful flowers every day of that last 10 years. I’ve gotten to know my customers in their happiest and toughest times but also, just when their life needs some colour. I’ve been lucky to work alongside the best team I could have ever wished for; talented florists and great humans that will forever be part of me.

I’m handing over this special flower shop to an incredibly deserving woman called Tianna. She’s been part of the HF crew for the last 5. A highly skilled and empathetic florist with a wonderful vision for the future of the industry. I have complete faith in her and wish her all the success she deserves (I will be right behind her if and when she needs).

For me, it’s time to explore other avenues and so many other things I’ve wanted to do in life and… my kids and husband deserve my time and focus.

I want to thank all of you for the last decade and hope to see you soon (maybe on Mother’s Day or next Valentine’s Day??).

The use of foliage in Floristry and the ‘no foliage’ trend
 
Foliage is a misunderstood and (we believe) underused tool in floristry today. Foliage allows a bouquet to fill a vase with lush blooms without having to spend unnecessary money on extra flowers to fill the gaps. Foliage spaces the flowers. It plays a vital role in protecting and cushioning the stems, whilst ensuring the blooms are not crowded or competing with each other. Foliage elevates a bouquet, creating depth and texture to an arrangement. Without foliage, often, your bouquet can appear rigid and bare. Excluding foliage altogether is like creating a movie without any extras, there isn’t any backup dances to make the star on stage shine brighter. 
 
There’s a trend in floristry that excludes foliage from bouquets, creating a more “minimal look”. The minimal look although currently popular often lacks interest, direction and unique textures that can only be created by foliage.
 
Different types of foliage should be used for different reasons. Foliage like, viburnum, camellia, gum and magnolia are primarily hidden and used for protection and elevation. These “supporting” foliages are calculated between $5-15 depending on the total size and budget of an average bouquet. This equates to one or 2 flowers at most.
Whereas foliage like copper beach, smoke bush, weeping magnolia and rose foliage as well as other tropicals should be shown off and manipulated to create artistic elements. These foliages are calculated in the same way a flower would in your bouquet.

We would never dismiss other designers’ style or preferences. When done well and for the right purpose and budget, the ‘no foliage’ style can be done well; with interest, balance and depth. For us, most of the time, it’s like under-seasoning a fantastic dish, just slightly underwhelming.
