Q is for Queen Anne’s Lace! 👑🌸

This delicate, lacy flower carries with it a charming legend. Queen Anne’s Lace, also known as wild carrot, is said to be named after Queen Anne of England, who was an expert lace maker. According to folklore, the tiny red or purple spot in the centre of the flower represents a drop of her blood from a prick of her needle while crafting lace.

With its intricate, umbrella-shaped clusters of tiny white flowers, Queen Anne’s Lace is a symbol of sanctuary, protection, and delicate beauty. It’s a wildflower that invites you to slow down and appreciate the intricate details in nature’s design. And it adds so much whimsy and romance to a bouquet. I just love it. 🌿

P is for Phylica ✨

Showcasing the enchanting Phylica for the letter P - a flower that looks like it’s been dusted with gold. Native to South Africa, Phylica’s soft, feathery blooms and silvery-green foliage give it a magical, otherworldly (and Dr Seuss-y) appearance. Sometimes called “Featherhead”, this bloom brings incredible texture and a subtle shimmer to bouquets and botanical art.

O is for Onion (flower)! 🧅🌸

Not your everyday garden star, but the onion flower is a true hidden gem. With its globe-shaped cluster of tiny purple (or white) blooms, the humble onion transforms into a striking architectural wonder when it flowers.

Outside of the kitchen, these blooms attract pollinators and add a whimsical touch to any garden or bouquet.

Symbolically, onion flowers represent layers, resilience, and the beauty found in the unexpected. They remind us that even the most ordinary things can surprise us with bursts of creativity and life. And aren’t they most gorgeous, Dr Seuss-y blooms!?

Have you ever let an onion go to flower, or used these blooms in your arrangements? I’d love to hear!

N for Nigella! ✨

Meet Nigella, also known as “Love-in-a-Mist” - a flower that looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale - or outer space! With its tentacle-y foliage, delicate petals, and intricate seed pods, Nigella brings a sense of whimsy and wonder to any garden or bouquet.

Like so many of the flowers I have shared so far, Nigella is more than just a pretty face: traditionally, its seeds (often called black cumin or kalonji) have been valued in herbal medicine and cooking for centuries. Symbolically, Nigella represents harmony, delicacy, and the magic of unexpected beauty - reminding us to look for wonder in the everyday.

Tell me, do you think of Nigella as flower or food?

Stay tuned for O! I have a very interesting bloom planned for that one! Feel free to guess 🌿

M is for Magnolia! 🌸

Magnolias (with the apt botanical name Magnolia grandiflora) have captivated hearts for centuries. Across cultures, they’re a symbol of dignity, nobility, and perseverance - blooming year after year, no matter what life brings.

In China, magnolias represent purity, elegance, and resilience. In the American South, they’re icons of hospitality and tradition. For many, the fleeting beauty of magnolia blooms is a reminder to embrace the present and walk through life with confidence and kindness.

And the best part, they are often right outside our door to enjoy.

The A-Z Floral Alphabet series blossoms on (see what I did there?), and for L, I’m showcasing the gorgeous Leucadendron. Hailing from South Africa, but widely grown and loved in Australia, these plants offer sculptural stems, bold cones, and ever-changing foliage - from lime green to fiery reds - making them a favourite for their long-lasting beauty, and bringing drama and texture to any bouquet or garden. They are also a symbol of versatility and endurance, thriving in tough conditions and looking fabulous all year round.

J is for Jonquil!

Today’s floral alphabet features the gorgeous, cheery jonquil (Narcissus jonquilla), a flower possibly valued most for its sweet fragrance (that might just be me). In the language of flowers, jonquils express a desire for love to be returned and the warmth of sincere friendship. Add in the fact that as cut flowers they are gorgeously long lasting and you've got a flower that deserves a place in any wedding bouquet.🌼

B for Banksia

There were lots of contenders for B - bachelor buttons, bunny ears, Billy buttons, begonia, bellflower, bougainvillea, buddleia, and another personal favourite berzelia - but I can’t go past my favourite Australian native flower, the divine banksia. So please enjoy this beautiful banksia serrata, with all its abundant foliage.
