Massive congrats to OPC athlete Reef Heazlewood for taking out the 2025 Krui Pro Men’s QS 6,000 title in South Sumatra, Indonesia!

Reef lit it up at Ujung Bocur with some next-level aerials and walked away with a career-best performance to kick off the 2025/26 WSL Regional Qualifying Series in style.

It’s no surprise to us, the work he puts in at OPC behind the scenes is next level. Well deserved, mate. Stoked for what’s ahead!

The last three months have been massive for Thomas Raymond, a rising force in Australian swimming!

Tom kicked off his stellar season with three silver medals at the Australian Nationals, showcasing consistency and grit at the highest level. From there, he took on the world stage at the World Cup in Egypt, earning a spot in his first World Championships and officially becoming an Australian Dolphin 🐬 an incredible milestone!

But he didn’t stop there.

Tom headed to Altitude Camp in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he trained at elevation and explored some of the most breathtaking landscapes America has to offer. He capped off the trip with a silver medal at the American Open Water Nationals, proving he’s just as strong in open water as he is in the pool.

These past few months have opened doors, pushed limits, and shown just how far Tom can go. We’re beyond proud of what he’s achieved and even more excited for what’s ahead.

There’s a ton of info out there on how we learn new skills.

But the one thing all experts agree on?

Skills are task-specific.

Your body learns to fire the right muscles, at the right time, in the right order - to perform a skill.

Change the movement, change the outcome.

If you mess with the task, even slightly, you change how your body learns and fires.

Sure, pretending to surf on a BOSU ball might improve ankle stability or balance. But will it improve your surfing?

Highly unlikely - it could actually make you worse.

Want to get better at a skill?

Do the actual skill.

We hear Insta coaches say:

“This ONE exercise will fix you!”

But how do they know that... without assessing you first?

Spoiler: They don’t.

It’s an educated guess at best. A marketing trick at worst.

Yeah, trendy online programs look like fun. And they should be!

But progress isn’t always fun.

It’s work.

Growth requires discomfort.

Stick with what feels comfy, and you won’t evolve, as a human or as an athlete.

And let’s be real...

Most of the “fun” stuff you see online skips the basics - especially strength training.

But here’s the truth:

📚 Stronger athletes are:

✔️ Faster

✔️ More powerful

✔️ Way less likely to get injured

There’s plenty of research to back that up.

OPC doesn’t do fluff.

Most people train up and down. Forward and backward.

But here’s the thing, life and sport aren’t that linear.

You cut, pivot, rotate, balance, absorb force - often sideways.

That’s where lateral training comes in.

At OPC, we coach movement in every direction.

Here are a few of our favourite lateral patterns you can add to your training today:

1️⃣ KB Side Lunge – Your first loaded lateral step

2️⃣ Elevated Side Lunge – Stability meets mobility

3️⃣ Lateral Sliders – One leg does the heavy lifting

4️⃣ Toe Touch Variation – Add torso rotation and flexion

The real gold is in the details

Foot, knee, and hip alignment.

Where’s your centre of gravity?

Is your torso hinged, upright, rotated?

This is the stuff that builds real athletes.

There are so many reasons athletes should engage in Breathwork, here are just a few.

✔️ Oxygen is fuel. The more we exert ourselves the more demand the body has for oxygen. Therefore the more effective we breath, the more oxygen makes its way to our cells, the more fuel we have, the better we perform!

✔️ Effective breathing calms our nervous system. It has an amazing way of utilising our vagus nerve and sending calming messages to the brain. When it’s time to perform stress levels can be high, using breathing techniques helps us remain in our optimal performance state.

✔️Effective breathing means the better exchange of O2 and CO2. This along with the calming effect mentioned earlier allows you to stay composed, your focus and attention is improved. Therefore your decision making abilities are improved!

✔️Sport can involve intense bouts of energy with short rests, this requires you to recover quick. Sport can also involve multiple games in a day, where you must make the most of those hours in between to recover. After a long weekend of intense sport we need to switch off and allow the nervous system to relax. Effective breathing techniques helps in all these situations!
