Emu Bottom Homestead has stood in the Sunbury valley since 1836, built by George Evans, one of the early settlers who arrived in Melbourne in 1835. For almost two centuries, this beautiful place has witnessed the growth of Melbourne from a fledgling settlement into the thriving city we know today.
In 1968, Hedley and Jan Elliott saw something special in Emu Bottom. They purchased the property when much of it had fallen into disrepair and lovingly restored the historic homestead, working with architects John and Phyllis Murphy to bring its early character back to life.
What followed was a remarkable new chapter — from historic homestead to a much-loved destination for weddings, celebrations and events, becoming an enduring part of the region’s story.
Although Hedley and Jan no longer own Emu Bottom, the legacy of the care they gave this remarkable place remains part of its story.
Some places are more than buildings. They are stories, lovingly carried forward.
