Japan is not one destination.

It can be Tokyo after dark, where modern architecture, impeccable hospitality and quiet precision create a celebration that feels unmistakably cosmopolitan.

Or it can be somewhere far beyond the city, surrounded by mountains, gardens, historic streets and landscapes where the rhythm of the wedding changes completely.

The luxury is not simply choosing Japan.

It is knowing which Japan belongs to you.

City or countryside.
Contemporary or steeped in tradition.
An intimate gathering or a multi-day destination celebration.

And for couples coming from overseas, creating a wedding here requires more than finding a beautiful venue. Language, etiquette, cultural expectations, local relationships and the smallest details of Japanese hospitality all shape the experience.

My work between Australia and Japan is about bridging those worlds, so international couples can experience Japan with greater understanding, while creating a celebration that still feels entirely their own.

Because the most memorable destination weddings don’t simply happen in a beautiful place.

They belong there.

Is it wrong to skip the tea ceremony (or other cultural rituals)? 👀

I get asked this by so many Asian Australian couples, and my honest answer is: skipping tradition doesn’t mean skipping meaning.

The betrothal, the hair combing, the tea ceremony. They can feel like one more stressful thing to get right in front of your whole family. But before you cut them, it’s worth understanding what they actually carry: love, respect, connection. The parts of the day you’ll still think about years later.

You don’t have to do it exactly how your parents or your friends did. You get to choose what stays, what changes, and what it means to you.

If you want help figuring that out, or want someone to guide the whole thing so it feels joyful instead of like a test, that’s exactly what I do. Save this for when you start planning 💍

There are some things you can admire from a distance and others you can only begin to understand when you experience them yourself.

Working with .toyama Kotobuki Weddings in Toyama taught me that a Japanese wedding kimono is never simply something beautiful to wear.

From the way each layer is placed, to how it is tied, adjusted and carried on the body, there is history behind the process. There is etiquette. There is symbolism. And perhaps most importantly, there are generations of knowledge held in the hands of the people who continue to practise this craft.

It reminded me so much of the Chinese Qun Kwa 褂.

They are completely different traditions, yet I find something deeply familiar between them.

Neither is simply a “traditional wedding outfit”. Both carry the stories of the cultures they come from. The motifs have meaning. The craftsmanship matters. How they are worn matters. And behind what the bride eventually sees in the mirror is an enormous amount of knowledge that can so easily be overlooked.

Perhaps because I have spent years learning about Qun Kwa and Chinese wedding traditions, experiencing Japanese bridal dressing made me even more curious. I found myself asking question after question like Why is this done this way? What does this piece mean? Why this order? What has changed, and what has remained?

And every answer gave me another little piece of Japan to understand.

This is why working internationally means so much to me. I don’t want to simply bring weddings to another country. I want to understand the culture that I am stepping into, its history, its people, its rules and the reasons behind them.

My heartfelt thank you to Kotobuki Weddings for being such an important part of our Toyama project, and for sharing your knowledge so generously with me and my team.

Your role went far beyond providing beautiful wedding attire. You helped us understand how it should be worn, respected and represented and that distinction is incredibly important to me.

The more cultures I work with, the more I realise how much there still is to learn.

Couples showcase series - Bo & Wai Mona Farm

I can probably say Bo, Wai and me go way back - after they’ve attended Amy Chen and TK Luong ’s wedding in 2023, they’ve quietly converted to be my fans 🤣 and only after they’ve engaged, in 2024, they finally broke their silence:

‘It’s Bo and Wai here, an engaged couple who saw your amazing work at Amy and Kevin’s wedding last year! We were absolutely amazed by how well you captivated us, the audience, and your passionate charisma.

Now that is our turn to get married, while looking for a celebrant Wai and I really have not been able to get you off our minds!’

Aww 🥰 that moment when I read their enquiry, I knew, we three are just meant to be (yea people do say I’m addictive, maybe it’s true) 🤭

Guess what, it’s you beebwut Wai Ting Mok you two are stuck in my mind and I have no plan to get rid of you. 🫶🫶🫶

We had the quiet privilege of stepping into The Classica Goen before its doors officially opened to trade partners, cameras in hand, taking in every detail while it was still just ours to see.

Every corner already tells a story worth saying “I do” to.

Every project starts with people who believe in it before it even has a proof of concept.

This is the beginning of something I’ve wanted to build for a long time: an ongoing series of weddings that bring two cultures together with real care, not just a beautiful backdrop. This first edition was shot in Toyama, and it’s already changed the way I think about what a destination wedding can be.

Over the next four chapters, I’ll share the story behind it properly. But it felt wrong to start anywhere except with the people who actually made it real.

All jokes aside though 🤣…

At many weddings, there’s often a loved one excited to capture every special moment.

As the bride makes her entrance, it’s easy for a few phones to pop up along the aisle, sometimes blocking the view without anyone realising it.

Of course, these moments come from a place of love and excitement. The ceremony is such a meaningful time for the couple, and being fully present helps everyone share in the magic together.

Keeping the aisle clear also allows the professional photographer to beautifully capture these once-in-a-lifetime memories for everyone to enjoy.

That’s why I always give a gentle reminder before the ceremony to help create a warm, shared experience where guests can relax, be present, and celebrate this special moment alongside the couple 🥰 With couple’s permission I would even create ‘papparazi opportunities’ during the ceremony so family and friends get to capture their favourite moments at the perfect time! 📸
