Most leaders are already thinking about wellbeing, engagement and performance.
Far fewer are thinking seriously about laughter.

For this special edition of The Play Lab, we are joined by Merv Neal, CEO of Laughter Yoga Australia and one of Australia’s leading gelotologists, for a conversation on The Serious Science of Laughter.

Merv’s story is anything but ordinary. After building a successful career in business, a life-changing health diagnosis shifted his direction from serious business to serious laughter. What followed became a life mission: helping adults, workplaces and communities understand laughter as something far more powerful than a reaction to humour.

Together, we’ll unpack what laughter does beneath the surface, why adults often lose access to it, and how it can become one of the most accessible ways to reconnect with play, wellbeing and ourselves.

You’ll walk away with a clearer understanding of why laughter deserves serious attention, plus practical ways to use it for yourself and your team without forcing positivity, awkward icebreakers or performative fun.

Leaders do not build culture through intention alone. They build it through rhythm.

That is exactly why we created our 12 Week Play Plan

It is a practical tool designed to help leaders and teams move from “we should do more of this” to actually planning the moments that keep connection, creativity, recognition, and reset alive across the quarter.

Inside, you’ll find:
• a Play Bank of weekly, fortnightly, monthly, and quarterly ideas
• an example calendar to show what this can look like in practice
• an editable version your team can use to build its own rhythm
• a Periodic Play Pack with ready-to-use resources to help you get started

Because play works best when it becomes part of how your team operates, not something saved for once a year.

When the social media lady says she needs a playful approach for the reel, and one coworker takes that as his moment to shine.

Exactly what the content needed, and to be fair, he absolutely delivered. Happy Friday from the team that knows play always makes things better.

National Volunteer Week is a reminder that community impact does not happen by accident. It happens because people choose to give their time, energy, care and skills to something bigger than themselves.

At Corporate Challenge Events, we see the power of volunteering through the charity partners we work alongside and the teams who step into our charity team-building programs ready to contribute with purpose.

When play and giving come together, something important shifts. People are not just completing a task or making a donation. They are connecting with the impact behind it, working together in a more human way and seeing how small acts of contribution can create something meaningful for someone else.

This year’s theme is “Your Year to Volunteer,” and it is a timely invitation for all of us to think about how we can support the communities around us in ways that feel practical, personal and lasting.

To every volunteer and every organisation creating space for people to give back: thank you. Your work helps build stronger, more connected communities.

This is what team building should feel like.

Not just a break from the work, but a chance to shift the energy, build trust, solve something together and remember what it feels like to be part of a team.

We were thrilled to work with the Adroit Insurance & Risk teams across their recent sessions and see so many people step into the experience with energy, humour and a willingness to get involved.

Thank you for having us, Adroit. It was a pleasure to help bring a little more play into your team culture.

A simple game, big joy, and a reminder that play spans the whole lifespan. It does not discriminate by age. In this moment, both the baby and the teen are getting something from play. For the baby, it supports cognitive and social development through laughter, interaction, and connection. For the teen, it is responsiveness, bonding, and the simple joy of making someone else light up. Play starts early, but its value never leaves us.

Culture does not shift because one activity lands well in a meeting. It shifts when leaders understand the conditions people need to connect, contribute and adapt with more confidence.

That is where play becomes powerful.

In our recent Play Lab conversation, we explored how small, intentional moments of play can become part of a team’s rhythm, not as an add-on, but as a practical way to support engagement, psychological safety and stronger human connection at work.

When leaders start small, they make play easier to access. When they keep going, they create a culture where people have more permission to show up, think differently and work together with more energy.
