After nearly twenty years photographing weddings, I’ve seen that the photographs people value most over time often include the people who matter to them.

Weddings are one of the rare days when so many of the important people in your life are together. Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends who have shared different parts of the journey.

It’s easy to focus on the dress, the flowers and all the details you’ve spent months planning. It’s also worth allowing a little space in the day to simply spend time with the people closest to you. Years later, many couples find themselves returning to the photographs that show the people who shared the day with them.

Sometimes it’s a quiet moment with your mum before the ceremony, your dad seeing you ready for the first time, or grandparents watching the day unfold from the side of the room.

These moments aren’t usually planned or posed. They simply happen during the day, sometimes a little imperfect, but often they are the photographs that feel the most real.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that the photographs people come back to are rarely the elaborate ones. More often, they’re the simple images that show the people who were there and the moments that mattered.

Ultimately, those are the photographs families hold onto.
