GAME CHANGERS: American artists who shaped the sound of Nu Skool Breaks.
I’m not talking about the classic breakbeats that gave us the samples, but the electronic music genres that emerged in the ’80s and '90s with the rise of sampling.
House wasn’t always four-to-the-floor, as the first track from Frankie Bones proves. This sound exploded in the US and UK, with British producers later creating hardcore, jungle and drum ’n’ bass.
By the late ’90s, Nu Skool Breaks was carving out its own identity. Over the following decade, it dominated clubs and festivals worldwide. Somewhere along the way, Nu Skool Breaks got shortened to Breaks, which I always felt was a bit inaccurate. The addition of Nu Skool helped distinguish this genre from the traditional interpretation.
🫡 This is my salute to the American artists whose sounds resonated so strongly with us in the UK. 👊
