The bridge had floated away in the 2022 floods. The festival still needed one.

When Orange FOOD Week's Forage event needed to connect two properties across a private waterway, the original bridge wasn't there. MDE Projects supplied a temporary floating bridge to reconnect the two properties, a 13-metre modular walkway. Built to solve the actual site problem, not the one in the original brief.

150 metres of floating walkway. 3.28 million people at the festival it served. ✨

MDE Projects built and installed a 150-metre floating walkway across Darling Harbour for Vivid Sydney, connecting Harbourside to Cockle Bay so festival goers could cross the water instead of walking around it. Across 23 nights, an estimated 3.28 million people came through Vivid, and every one of those nights, this walkway had to hold its share of the crowd safely, in a harbour that doesn't stop moving.

That's the brief for every MDE installation: get people onto the water without anyone noticing the engineering underneath.

A crowd moves differently on water than it does on land.

Loading shifts as people gather and move, and a floating venue has to stay stable through all of it. That's managed with engineering, distribution, capacity planning and systems built for the way crowds actually behave, not the way a plan assumes they will.

Stability under a moving crowd is designed long before anyone steps on board.
