Burragorang Bush Run Honey

Burragorang Bush Run Honey Producing award winning Cumberland Plain bush honey at our Oakdale property.

Honey is available to purchase most weekends from our self-serve roadside stall on Egans Road, Oakdale. Burragorang Bush Run is located in Oakdale, on the rural fringe of the Greater Sydney region of NSW. Although we can see the city skyline from our property, living here is feels like you are a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Our 18 acre property is predominately virgi

n Cumberland Plain woodland - how it is today is how it has been for thousands of years. Burragorang Bush Run is home to many native species of eucalyptus, wattle, tea tree and other flowering plants and shrubs, meaning our bees have an almost constant (and ever-changing) source of nectar throughout the year which gives our bush honey its rich and complex flavour. Our bush honey is single-filtered and non-heat treated to leave all the good stuff in. Non-heat treated honey can crystalise, but this is perfectly OK and means you have a product that is as close to its natural form as possible. By not heat treating our honey we ensure that the end product is of the highest quality possible as heating and filtering honey can degrade the product, and strip it of some of the health benefits that honey is known to provide. If your honey does crystalise you can simply continue to enjoy it in its thicker (crystalised) form, or you may choose to gently heat the jar of honey until it has returned to a liquid form.

It has been a good while since we last posted… life has a way of getting busy!

That said, we are still here, still tending to our bees, and happily, they are still producing the amazing honey we know and love.

This summer was one for the record books with the bees being particularly productive. This in turn has allowed Finn to finally realise his dream of having a roadside honey stall.

The stall was built and the signs were painted years ago, ready for the day we had enough honey for our regular customers and new customers in the wider community… and today was the day Finn was finally able to open his stall!

Thanks to everyone who has already purchased jars - it has been an absolute thrill for him as he has checked in on the stall throughout the day.

Drop by on Egans Rd, Oakdale and grab a jar while stocks last!

($10/500g jar. We welcome cash and bank transfers - bank details are displayed at the stall)

🥇CAMDEN SHOW 🥇

The girls have been working hard all season and they’ve done it again!!!

After watching her brother take home first prize last year with our honey, Ava wanted in on the action. So this year they each chose a hive and entered that hive’s honey under their names.

Imagine our shock and delight when we arrived at the Show to see the kids had taken out 1st and 2nd place!!!

Looking forward to suiting up and telling the girls the good news ☺️

[ RE-QUEENING ]

Given what we know of how our mail is handled, I feel like this Queen would have some stories to tell about her journey to Burragorang Bush Run!

We have had bees for more than 10 years and this is our first experience of re-queening a hive. Generally speaking we like to let nature do what it does best with the bees managing their hives as instinct dictates, but after a couple of seasons of one particular hive not thriving as well as others on our property we decided it was time to give re-queening a go.

While it will be a week or two before we know if it has been a successful operation, early signs of the hive accepting their new queen are good.

Now we cross our fingers and wait.

🥇🥇🥇 We have always thought our Burragorang Bush Run honey was the bees knees, but now I guess it is official!

The Camden Show is a local institution that has been running since 1886. Historically, the Show has only been cancelled on a few occasions during war times. The pandemic and then floods have seen the Show cancelled for the past 3 years, so to see it back and as big as ever is very special for all those who love the Show, as we do.

We always encourage the kids to enter some items in the pavilion - art, cooking… it is great to be part of a local tradition.

This year, after talking about it but never being organised enough to do it in the past, we decided to enter our honey. Finn takes a particular interest in our apiary, so we decided to enter the honey under his name.

Anyone who knows our local area knows there is a very strong tradition of beekeeping, and so the honey section of the Show is always pretty keenly contested. To have taken out the top prize against 21 other entries in the ‘Liquid Honey - Medium’ category has truly blown our minds!

We can’t wait to suit up for a hive inspection to let the girls know the good news 🥇🥇🥇

According to Facebook it has been 479 days since we last posted to this page so no time like the present for a bit of an update.

The main reason for the lack of posts is that the weather has made it a challenging few seasons for our bees!

The incessant wet weather of the 21/22 season saw us lose a hive, with the bees in our remaining hives managing to get just enough foraging days to make it through the year.

This 22/23 season has been much better weather-wise, but nectar flows have been scant and inconsistent. Still, we were able to collect a few swarms and rehome them on our property, and we harvested a small batch of honey from our OG hive, so it feels like things are looking up.

The kids have been working on a little project that we look forward to sharing with our local community soon, so keep an eye out for more updates!
