We are proud to co-present Estuary by Ngioka Bunda-Heath, with Melbourne Fringe, as part of its Deadly Fringe Program. 🖤❤️💛

Launched in 2017, the program highlights innovative work by First Nations artists.
Choreographer Ngioka Bunda-Heath says that being a part of this program feels like an important step.

“[The work] has been developed through research, cultural consultation and time on Country, and Deadly Fringe gives me the opportunity to take that work from a development space into a public space and invite audiences into the conversation.”

In a university archive, choreographer Ngioka Bunda-Heath discovered a voice recording of one of her ancestors singing songs in language. She weaves this priceless piece of personal and cultural history into her latest work, Estuary.

“Hearing my ancestors’ language being sung was incredibly moving. The recordings have influenced the rhythm and quality of the movement and created a deeper relationship between the dancers, the sound and the idea of Country,” she says.

📣 Applications are now open 🌈🌻

Our 2027 Companies in Residence program offers established independent companies residency at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre where they can contribute to a community of practice by creating free and low-cost opportunities for early career artists and host 2 Scratch Nights.

Our 2027 Development program provides in-kind venue hire at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre and a cash stipend to incubate new works that make an original and exciting contribution to the creative sector.

✅ An online information session for these applications will occur on Tuesday 13 October at 12.30pm. The session will be recorded and made available on the Darebin Arts website until applications close.

Brooklyn Bond (Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Latji Latji) and Jack Sheppard (Tagalaka, Dagalag) are performers who have deep personal and spiritual connections to the waterways they embody in Ngioka Bunda-Heath’s latest dance piece Estuary.

“My relationship to water provides a place of grounding,” says Brooklyn. “Through water, I acknowledge Country as a living presence that holds stories, knowledge and connection.”

“Water holds and grows the memories of deep time that perpetuate across generations,” says Jack.

Through her artistic practice, choreographer Ngioka Bunda-Heath has found that lineage, history and culture can be expressed and continued in many ways.

“Sometimes it comes through movement, gesture, rhythm, song, language, memory and the feeling of being on Country,” she explains.

Ngioka explains that her artistry is a way to continue her own stories of family and bloodlines: “Every time I return to family, lineage and Country, I discover something new about who I am and what I have inherited, but also what I have to contribute to the next generations.”

We cannot wait to see this inspiring choreographer’s latest work at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre.

Wakka Wakka, Ngugi and Birrpai choreographer Ngioka Bunda-Heath shares her deep connection with Country, family, land, waterways and culture in her latest work, Estuary, at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre.

“As a First Nations artist, bringing Country into a theatre is a responsibility. I am not trying to recreate Country on stage; I am sharing a small part of what Country has taught me, through my body, my culture, my language and my movement,” says Bunda-Heath.
