The number 7 has long carried a sense of mystery and wholeness - appearing across fables, religious texts, astronomy and science, and woven into symbolic systems across cultures.

“I have a playful and reverent affinity to the number…mostly around its symbolism as a representative of wholeness,” choreographer Trá Mi says.

In 7 Dances for 7 People, that fascination becomes ritual.

7 dancers—possessed by the union of the spiritual (3) and the physical (4)—move together in a hypnotic choreography of precision, endurance and devotion. What begins as an obsession with the number suddenly transforms into a shared physical experience: 7 bodies, 1 collective rhythm, reaching toward something whole.

7 Dances for 7 People expands on choreographer Trá Mi Dinh’s Seven Dances for Two People, originally commissioned by Lucy Guerin Inc ➡for the 2024 Pieces program.
This new work invites us to enter an imagined world—this time, with more bodies, and more possibilities.

Reflecting on the original work, she says,

“Falling back into a world that is shifting and slippery and mysterious and obsessive is a big draw card. The duet felt like an invitation to imagine the world, and this expansion allows me to dive into the depths of it. Working with so many incredible artists is a rare gift, so I’m lapping it up.”

Choreographer Trà Mi Dinh is obsessed with the number 7 - her playful yet reverent affinity to the number fuels her latest work 7 Dances for 7 People.

“Choreographically, I’m interested in how the body interacts with a 7/8 time signature and exploring complex and layered patterning through repetition and manipulation of time.”

Congratulations to the creative team and cast of Chenturan Aran’s Cut Chilli on a phenomenal opening night! The work is witty and incisive – by turns laugh-out-loud funny, uncomfortable, heart wrenching, tender, and hopeful.

We look forward to Community Night on Saturday, after which Lynelle Long will host a discussion panel on intercountry adoption, in partnership with InterCountry Adoptee Voices (ICAV), and to Sunday’s post-show artist talk.

Week 1 is SOLD OUT and Week 2 is quickly heading in that direction, so book quickly to avoid missing out. Tickets remain for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights next week.

Our last Scratch Night: Dedication was full of bold ideas, big laughs, creative risks and plenty of love. Local artists came together to write, perform, experiment and explore — and the room was buzzing with support from start to finish.

Huge love to our co-curators & hosts VIMH and Elbow Room for helping make the night so special. 🫶

And a special shoutout to DJ JOF for keeping the good vibes going with groovy tunes that extended the chats, connections and celebrations into the night. 🎶✨

📢 ESTUARY BY NGIOKA BUNDA-HEATH: Coming soon to Darebin Arts Speakeasy 2026, presented as part of Melbourne Fringe

Known for creating deeply personal works that explore family, ancestry and the stories carried within the body, Wakka Wakka, Ngugi and Birrpai choreographer Ngioka brings her latest dance work, Estuary, to Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre.

This moving duet brings together dancers Jackie Sheppard (Tagalaka, Dagalag) and Brooklyn Bond (Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Latji Latji) in an exploration of saltwater and freshwater identities, and the enduring connections between First Nations peoples, Country, sky and waterways. Blending powerful movement with archival voice recordings and original footage captured on Country, Estuary invites audiences into a moving reflection on identity, resilience, and the ongoing currents of dispossession and reclamation.

Dynamic collaborators Chenturan Aran and Isabella Vadiveloo (The Supposed to Be at Rising 2026) team up again for the Melbourne premiere of Cut Chilli.

Chenturan Aran is a Sri Lankan Tamil Australian playwright, journalist and screenwriter known for his sharp banterous dialogue, dark humour and speculative worlds.

Isabella Vadiveloo is a director, performer, devisor and intimacy director with both settler Australian and Sri Lankan Tamil heritage. She is interested in developing new, form pushing and politically engaged performances of underrepresented stories.

Fresh from acclaimed commissions with Sydney Dance Company and Lucy Guerin Inc, Tra Mi creates choreography that bends our perception of time, rhythm and expectation.

Across cultures and throughout history, the number 7 has symbolised perfection and totality. 7 is seen as the union of the spiritual (3) and the physical (4), offering a compelling lens through which to consider the act of dancing.

In this new work, Tra Mi brings together 7 of Naarm's most exceptional dancers in a hypnotic ritual of precision, endurance and devotion.
