🌼 Snap Off the Flowers — Stop the Spread! 🚫
Did you know arum lilies can spread by both seed and underground corms? Arum lily seeds are spread by fruit eating birds, emus and foxes. The seed passes through birds very quickly. Thankfully arum lily seed does not have long-lived dormancy in the soil and is only viable for up to 12 months. Stop seed set and you can stop movement.
While chemical control is most effective, one quick action you can take right now to reduce their spread is simple:
👉 Snap off the flower heads before they seed!
✔️ Cut as close to the top of the flower stem as you can – this stops developing seeds from drawing energy stored in the stem
✔️ It’s fine to chop and drop the flowers on the ground if seeds are still green
⚠️ But once the flowers turn yellow and dry, seeds become viable – so remove and bin them
🧤 And don’t forget: arum lilies have toxins which can irriate some people’s skin, so we recommend gloves when handling them.
This easy step helps stop the next generation of weeds from spreading – especially when spraying, slashing or digging out is not an option. Together, every action adds up!
