Some highlights from my time snapping the ANZAC Day celebrations at Albion Hotel Parramatta last Saturday. The weather was delightful, taking in all the excitement of the Two Up was a treat, MC Tim was top notch, there was lovely live music, and the good vibes were absolutely flowing 📸❤️🇦🇺

I swear this isn’t all I photographed all year 😛

My focus remained mostly on Theo this year, who gained another two days of preschool, giving me four days a week to start catching up on the past five years of life-admin backlog, housework, food prep, and more physical self-improvement, which helped a lot with mental self-improvement - forever a work in progress!

Running twice a week, and the resulting need for physio, has become a near-constant, gaining back a bit of “me” time. I’ve also started picking up photo gigs again, which has been exciting, but challenging to fully dive back into work, as the dual preschool schedule also resulted in twice the exposure to sicknesses. Being the primary carer is unsurprisingly challenging🤦🏼‍♂️ It’s been a seemingly never-ending battle, but we’re very much looking forward to more hopeful stability when Theo starts Kindy in Feb!

More than anything, this year revolved around a massive month-long adventure in June, through Paris, Italy, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, spending 2-4 days in each location along the way, with our 4yo and my 70yo parents in tow! It was both Theo’s and my parents’ first time in Europe, which made everything we did that much more special. Our dear friend Rolf even came down from Norway to join us for a week! What a special reunion 🥰 Highlights from that journey will definitely find their way here in time ❤️

Once home, I suffered a surgical mishap during a relatively routine kidney stone clear out and vasectomy procedure, which made recovery much longer and the second half of this year more challenging, but I’m finally feeling more myself, made it into my 40th year, and I’m heading into the new year feeling stronger and more able than ever.

Julie continued to be our rock, both at home, and with her stability at work, and Theo’s had more big feelings and behavioural challenges this year (four has been as or more challenging that three), but reasoning is becoming possible! He has returned to swim lessons after a year off, wanting to improve his abilities (very proud of that choice and his work to stay focused, learn and grow), he’s now legitimately able to read most things with a bit of effort and patience (amazing!), simple math is starting to stick, board games are a new obsession (and so fun with his ability to focus and follow the rules!) and we’ve just moved up to a bigger bike, making riding easier and more rewarding 😍

Also live music! I ticked a lot of great artists off my list of must-see, and it feels good to be seeing live music regularly again ❤️🎵🎶

2025 has been a big year, but 2026 is shaping up to be even bigger still, with some important milestones in view, a reunion with Rolf’s family in Thailand planned, and a lot of new joys to relish. I hope you’ve all got some good things to look forward to in the new year as well!

Happy New Year, everyone! 🎆

Aurora Australis

Looking south-southeast from La Perouse, NSW - 2025.11.12 - 11:19PM

It’s rare to see the Aurora in Sydney, mostly due to all the light pollution, but also because when these geomagnetic storms occur in our upper atmosphere, they’re not usually powerful enough to reach this far north on the globe. Instead, they are much more prevalent, and far more stunning further south.

The same is true for the northern hemisphere. The further north you’re able to get, the more striking the Aurora Borealis can be.

I couldn’t see any activity from our rooftop, which was unsurprising considering Sydney Airport is directly south of our building and very bright at night, especially with a long exposure.

So, I jumped in the car and drove out past the airport and Port Botany to La Perouse, as it’s the closest location I could think of that has a darker night sky to the south.

At first, the sky just held this pink glow when photographed with my proper camera, until about an hour into shooting, when a bit of activity started to kick off, with vertical shafts dancing through the pink cloud, giving me some luck with a few captures.

This one was my favourite ❤️

Another successful journey around the sun complete as I round out my fourth decade. It’s a little surreal.

39 put on a good show, and I look forward to what 40 brings. Here’s to 40 more! 🎉

I’m really happy with the first photo from my previous post, especially the neighbours on their balcony, in the foreground at the bottom of the frame, taking photos of the fireworks with their phones… but everything’s so small on here, so here’s some closer detail crops 😉

Another year, another bunch of fireworks photos ❤️

My focus has remained on our not-so-little fella, as he grows and develops at breakneck speed. The new addition of two days at preschool has started to free me up, which has been really good, and it has also introduced many great, and some not so great, new behavioural challenges in Theo, which has been fuuuun! Will the never-ending barrage of sicknesses ever end? What an absolute rollercoaster ride.

2024 saw us make a second visit to Tasmania, followed by a second journey to North America to visit family, which included Theo’s FIRST live Phish show (my 51st!), battling our SECOND Canada-plans-ruining bout of COVID-19, and so much more.

Theo’s also READING EVERYTHING and starting to spell and write competently 🤯, building LEGO sets well above his age range, playing the drums, being totally comfortable and confident at preschool right from the start, getting to know schoolmates and already has a best friend 😍 He’s still swimming, scooting and riding his pedal bike with ease, both down and now up hills… he drives me crazy lately, but I could gush about this kid all day.

Three has definitely been a VERY challenging age, but despite a great deal of emotional battles, sickness and general turmoil, I cannot get over this kid’s developmental leaps and bounds over the past year.

I’m looking forward to the year ahead, with more days of preschool (which will give me further freedom to chip away at the past 4 years of personal backlog, and allow me to continue finding myself), as well as some very exciting travel plans.

Stay tuned… 2025 is shaping up to be one heck of a year! 🎆😀🎇

Waxing Crescent & Venus
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Living in a city is weird and wonderful.

Unless I go up on the roof, this is all of the sky that I can see from our flat - juuust enough, but also never enough.

Having this limited snippet of the horizon often presents fascinating juxtaposition, though, like the silhouettes of the neighbouring rooftops, low-hanging clouds, and a very large airplane departing Sydney Airport, backed by the glowing purple/orange gradient sunset sky, with the waxing crescent moon and Venus glowing brightly above… all briefly nestled together for one fleeting moment.

Witnessing these sporadic instances in time always brings a smile to my face, and capturing them brings me even greater joy. Like catching a frame of a wild animal out in nature, something about cityscape moments like these feels unique and special, despite the far more mundane subject matter and scenery depicted.

Perhaps it just feels nice to take a moment to notice the small, interesting things, document them, and share this fascination with others.

We’re Floating In Space
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
5hrs away from Sydney, the stars are incredible. Despite the astonishing wind tonight, I was able to get a few clean, focused frames looking up at our impressive Milky Way Galaxy.

We don’t get out of the Big Smoke enough, but when we make it happen, it’s views like this that remind me why I need this time away - well, the views, and the terrific company of good mates that live out here.

One of my favourite things about Australia is the ability to get out into the middle of nowhere, or nearly nowhere, and really feel my insignificance.

We are tiny little specks, a conundrum on this little speck of a planet, floating around in this swirling speck of a galaxy, like all the other little twinkling specks out in this vast, endless expanse of space. It is truly incredible that we are simply able to exist.

All the daily repetition, frustrations, failures, and hardships we carry become far less important staring up at all these stars. It feels good to just look up and let go a little 🔭❤️
