Mayfield Floral Co Florist studio based in Mayfield NSW We are a family owned bricks and mortar florist in Mayfield NSW.

Founded by Michael Reilly, Chris and Lisa Fowler purchased the shop in July 2019. Marianne Fowler is a qualified florist who has run her home based wedding business Blossom and Fern Floral Design since 2016, as well as as a wedding photography business since 2010. Her specialty is modern, natural, out of the box wedding design. Marianne is customer's first port of call when it comes to ordering gift arrangements right up to creating bespoke wedding designs. Where possible, eco friendly construction methods are preferred. We much rather use recyclable, biodegradable and reusable materials as opposed to single use plastic and non-biodegradable floral foam. Our aim is to provide a friendly and helpful customer experience and to continue bringing the joy of flowers to Mayfield and beyond.

I just celebrated my 11th wedding anniversary. Here's something I wish I knew when I was looking for wedding florists, before I was one.

When I first reached out to a local florist for a quote I got back $550 for a bridal bouquet. This was back in 2014 and before crazy inflation. My jaw fell to the ground.

Even now, that price is pretty hefty for a bridal bouquet.

Was she right in her cost? Probably, but nothing was explained to me, and now I know why.

I gave no helpful information and spammed probably 5 florists with the same generic email. What I got back was generic, non-specific and outside of a budget I didn't even communicate. Then I just ghosted.

So learn from my mistakes: if you want quotes that are going to offer you exactly what you want, do your research on what to ask for and then actually TALK to a few florists, you'll gain so much more knowledge and can then make an informed choice.

Little green bricks. Otherwise known as floral foam.

You may have gotten a cardboard box with foam sitting in the bottom and flowers arranged within.

I hate touching it and getting it on my hands, seeing the micro-plastics going down the drain and knowing I'm contributing to the pollution of our beautiful waterways.

So it's being phased out of the daily rotation of offerings.

You might have noticed that I don't offer "boxed" or "ceramic" options on the website anymore. and the above is why!

Luckily there is a solution if you need to . A re-useable, more sustainable glass vase

I'm still working out how to reduce it in wedding work, but being totally transparent, thats a work in progress.

I've stopped giving out those little plastic packet sachets of flower food. Why?

They are awful for the environment (like those plastic fish you get with sushi) and in an industry known for its bad environmental impact I don't want to add to the problem.

The good news? You can recreate a solution that works just as well with the ingredients you likely already have in your pantry.

❣ 1 teaspoon sugar
❣ 1 teaspoon white vinegar
❣ 1 litre of water

Remember to change the water frequently and cut the stems so everything lasts longer!

When I was learning to be a florist you had to do 38 hours of work experience to get your certificate.

One of my favourite experiences was helping to facilitate workshops. From people coming in nervous and thinking they didn't have any creativity to taking home something they were proud of.

It's the feeling I love to replicate when I now host my own workshops.

The partnership between you and your wedding florist is collaborative.

You don’t need (and want tbh) a florist who says yes to everything — you need one who can explain why something will or won’t work, kindly and clearly.

When you're having initial conversations, pay attention to:

❣ How your questions are answered
❣ Whether you feel rushed or supported
❣ If they simplify things rather than complicate them
❣ Feeling understood is just as important as liking the designs.

The right florist won’t make you feel like you're just another thing on the to-do.

I had an interaction with a customer the other day, and it made me a little sad.

As I was pulling together a bouquet, I asked who the flowers were for, and she said, "myself".

It's so rare that people buy themselves the flowers or send themselves a lovely bouquet. They have no problem spending on others but can never justify spending a little luxury on themselves.

(And I'm not talking about the half-dead flowers I see people buying from Coles on a Sunday)

So this is your reminder to buy the damn flowers for YOU! The good ones. You're worth it.
