Whether you are driving a $500 standard road car, or a purpose built vehicle, Motorkhanas are the perfect event to learn car control, get competitive, or just have fun! Motorkhanas – How to get involved

Levels of involvement:
Spectator:
All motorkhana events run in WA are free to attend as spectators

Officials:
Event organisers are always on the look-out for officials; everything from crowd-cont

rol, timing and event command is available and it’s as easy as signing up as a Motorsport Australia Trainee Official on the day. This will allow to carry out tasks on the day and it also puts in place steps to get your officials license

Competitor:
There are some Come ‘n’ Try Motorkhanas held during the year where you can just turn up and pay for a temporary Motorsport Australia license ($25). Some of these types of event run by the Mini Car Club have this fee covered by the club, so the events are essentially free (for newcomers). You can also enquire with the organising club because other motorkhana events can also have these one-day (Level 1) licenses available. All motorkhanas, whether Come ‘n” Try or State Championship events are always low-key. All drivers are willing to give advice to newcomers and you certainly won’t be the only newcomer at the event. Drivers’ skill levels at all events range from National Champions to 12 year-old beginners. There is a vehicle class structure based on the physical size (wheelbase) of your car so you will be competing against drivers in similar vehicles. Once you’ve had had a try at motorkhana and caught the bug (which you will), you can join a CAMS car club and pay for a 1 year Motorsport Australia Level 2 license.

Ever wondered what to drive in a Motorkhana? Cars are split into classes based on wheelbase, so whatever you've got in the garage, there's likely a spot for it! Swipe to find your class 👉

Class A | Wheelbase up to 2150mm
The shortest wheelbase class is home to some classic small cars. Think Morris Mini 850, Mini Moke, Leyland Moke, and the Austin Healey. These nimble little machines love the tight, twisty nature of a motorkhana course, with their short wheelbase makes them incredibly agile around the markers.

Class B | Wheelbase 2151–2390mm
A step up in size but still very much in the "fun little car" territory. Class B includes cars like the MGB GT, Suzuki Swift, Westfield, Toyota Starlet, and Mazda MX5. A great mix of classics and modern hatchbacks, with the MX5 often being the car of choice in a Motorkhana!

Class C | Wheelbase 2391–2574mm
This is where your everyday hot hatch belongs. Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Corolla, BMW 118i, and Mazda 2 all sit in Class C. If you've got a standard front-wheel-drive hatch in the driveway, there's a very good chance it belongs here.

Class D | Wheelbase over 2575mm
The largest production car class. BMW M135i, Proton Jumbuck, Holden Camira, Hyundai Accent, and Toyota Soarer all compete here. Bigger wheelbase means more need for the handbrake to slide around those markers!

Class E | AWD & 4WD Production Vehicles
Got an all-wheel drive or 4WD? You're in Class E, regardless of wheelbase. Toyota GR Yaris, Subaru WRX, and Mitsubishi Evo are the poster cars here.

Class F | FWD Specials
Purpose-built or heavily modified front-wheel-drive specials. These aren't your average road cars, think Turben Special, Mini Cooper S Special, and Motorkhana Special AV2.

Class G | RWD Specials
The rear-wheel-drive equivalent of Class F. Custom-built specials like the W-003 that are engineered specifically for Motorkhanas.

Still not sure where your vehicle fits in? Send us a message and we'd be happy to help!

Why are MX5s frequently the car of choice at motorkhanas? Not only do they look good... But being a rear-wheel drive car that is light with a great turning circle, they are perfect for navigating around the markers and tight turns!
