🚨 OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

The team were so excited for Game One tomorrow… we may have accidentally overprepared the Main Arena yesterday. 👀💥

Bit of maroon paint…
A few banners…
Maybe got slightly carried away. 😅

Safe to say the grounds crew are Queenslanders. ❤️🤍

Do you reckon we went too far… or not far enough? 😂

🌈 Sometimes the Brisbane weather likes to remind us who’s really in charge…

One minute it’s sunshine, the next minute it’s sideways rain… and then suddenly a rainbow lands right over the Mount Gravatt Showgrounds.

We checked… sadly no actual pot of gold was found.
But honestly, after 110+ years of community memories, maybe this place already is one. 😉

From local sporting groups, community halls, cultural festivals and markets, to major events and family experiences — this little patch of green in the middle of Brisbane keeps giving back year after year.

Even the rainbow knows where the good community assets are. 🌈

🥰 💚 days like today are exactly the reason why.

A precinct with more than 110 years of history continuing to evolve into a true multi-purpose community destination for Brisbane’s southside.

Today alone the grounds came alive with:

- A major multicultural community event delivered by Kairali Brisbane Inc
- Brisbane Afrikaanse Kerk hosting a long-standing private gathering in the Upper Community Hall
- UCMAS delivering maths tutoring and educational development classes
- Queensland Quilters Inc. and Decorative Arts groups continuing their regular monthly community activities

All operating side by side within one community precinct.

This is the role community assets should play.
Not sitting dormant… but active, inclusive and constantly contributing to local life every single week of the year.

The Mount Gravatt Showgrounds Trust now supports more than 30+ regular not-for-profit and community organisations onsite, alongside sporting groups, cultural associations, education providers, family events and growing entertainment opportunities.

Looking ahead, the opportunity becomes even greater.

A future-focused precinct capable of supporting wider sporting activation, national experiences, cultural tourism, entertainment and stronger grassroots community outcomes — while still protecting the history and heart of the site.

Respect the past.
Build for the future.

Brick by brick.

Mount Gravatt Showgrounds Chief Operations Officer Jason van Hunnik met with Nic and Cheryl from the Mount Gravatt Girl Guides Chapter, recognising the ongoing contribution volunteers and families make to one of the precinct’s longest-standing community organisations.

Operating from the Showgrounds precinct for more than five decades, the Mount Gravatt Girl Guides continue to play an important role in supporting and developing future women leaders through community engagement, resilience building and youth development programs.

During the visit, Nic and Cheryl showcased a range of recent and upcoming internal refurbishment works within the Girl Guides facilities, with the Mount Gravatt Showgrounds Trust assisting through site approvals and ongoing precinct support.

Mr van Hunnik said organisations like the Girl Guides represented the heart of what the Showgrounds precinct stood for.

“These organisations are powered by volunteers, families and community spirit. The Girl Guides have built a remarkable legacy here over many decades, and the Trust is proud to continue supporting that future,” he said.

“With more than 30 regular community and not-for-profit organisations operating across the precinct, it’s important we continue investing into infrastructure and partnerships that strengthen opportunities for future generations.”

The Trust says the upcoming improvements will help modernise the facilities while ensuring the site continues serving local families and the wider community for many years to come.

Families interested in youth leadership, confidence building and community involvement are encouraged to connect with the Mount Gravatt Girl Guides Chapter to learn more about local programs and opportunities.

Today I had the pleasure of catching up with Judy Hodgkinson, President of Queensland Quilters Inc. — one of the many wonderful not-for-profit community organisations that regularly call Mount Gravatt Showgrounds home.

The Trust has proudly supported Queensland Quilters for close to two decades. Established in 1984, the organisation continues to support 45 affiliated quilting groups across Queensland through creativity, friendship, education and community connection.

As Chief Operations Officer, one of the most rewarding parts of this role is seeing how organisations like this continue to bring people together across generations. Community spaces are not just about buildings and events — they are about connection, belonging and creating opportunities for people to engage with one another.

We spent time discussing what the future may look like as the Trust continues planning for the long-term vision of the Showgrounds precinct. I can confidently say Queensland Quilters remain an important part of the fabric of Mount Gravatt Showgrounds moving forward.

A little personal trivia from today — Judy’s husband John was actually my High School Principal at Runcorn State High School over 28 years ago, and we still keep in contact to this day.

I still remember him presenting me with my Prefect Leader badge in my final year. Looking back now, I honestly think he probably saw leadership potential in me long before I saw it in myself ❤️

Moments like today are a reminder that community connections can last a lifetime.

Mount Gravatt Showgrounds is proud to support more than 30 regular community and not-for-profit organisations each year, helping ensure this precinct continues serving the community for generations to come.

Connecting communities. Inspiring celebrations.
