BoomShop Drumming

BoomShop Drumming Vibrant drumming workshops for young and old. Animate your group through the dynamic power of rhythm.

Emily Walter has over 15 years of experience in facilitating small and large groups of young and old through retreats, camps and leadership training days. Her passion for percussion was born when she found a drumming group in Balnarring and was blown away by its ability to draw people out and lift up a group of relative strangers; she witnessed a higher connection built through rhythm in the momen

t and the transformative experience of self expression both on a personal and community level. Emily eventually found herself on a drumming tour in West Africa where she and a group of other enthusiastic percussionists were trained by drumming and dance masters and lead to a place of complete awe and humility at the incredible power of rhythm in community. Working and volunteering for years in the disability sector, Emily now also sees the great potential for sharing her passion for percussion with people who have all ranges of abilities as it is such an accessible pursuit with an incredibly quick turn around in terms of personal satisfaction and achievement.

22 years ago I walked out on my last day of high school dressed as the statue of liberty wearing a white sheet and a tin foil crown. That dorky young statue could never have dreamt of the life that lay ahead of her. Today, I had the honour of returning to CLC to run a drumming workshop for the support staff.  To see the old buildings and smell that familiar eucalyptus brought me right back.

So, so very much life has happened since I walked those corridors slightly uncomfortable in my own skin. I feel grateful both for how those years at the school formed me and also for how much I've grown in myself since then. Being able to be back there, fully embodied and sharing a passion of mine with people doing such important work was an utter joy 💖

Each of my drums comes with an adorable, colourful drum protector (thanks to ) and nearly every time I run a workshop, regardless of the age of the participants, people can’t help but try on these little hats. It makes me laugh every time, even if it does mean hanging more washing on the line! As much as I love drumming, I love the people I get to meet through drumming- playful, open and full of joy.

If you’re interested in bringing some extra joy into your workplace or friendship circle, or if you just want to try on a fabulous new hat, please message me or check out www.boomshop.com.au

I recently ran a couple of drumming workshops surrounded by towering gum trees during a Mountain Fest. It is always such an honour to be present at these events- the singing, the joy and community are just so special. There's another couple running this year, the next on 16th-18th of June. Put it in your diary if you love to sing and can spare/make the time! ♥️

This is Pete.
15 years ago I walked into a music store in Frankston and started tapping on some drums. The girl at the counter said, "my friend's dad, teaches African drumming if you're interested." I was definitely interested, so went along the next Tuesday night a little nervous but mostly excited. While I'd had a djembé for years, I'd never played in a drumming circle. The difference was completely mindblowing! As soon everyone started playing I felt my heart light up and energy soar. I knew deeply in that moment that I'd found a new passion, or it had found me. My teacher, Pete, was this enthusiastic, kind, incredible musician who made everyone feel so welcome. I continued to follow this passion for 6 years under his guidance, all the way to when I travelled to Africa to learn from drumming masters in Ghana. From there, after travelling Europe I returned home to purchase 20 drums so I could teach people in Melbourne and share my passion like Pete had helped me.

Last week I returned to Balnarring to that same class as Pete has just begun teaching again. It was an honour to be back there in his presence!

You never know where a visit to a music shop may take you! Follow your curiosity in life and lean in to the slightly scary/slightly exciting ideas you may have.

Perhaps you could even book a drumming workshop for a group of friends and share this joyful, therapeutic experience that I felt during my first (and every subsequent) lesson with Pete.

Body percussion is always a welcome addition to a drumming workshop. Not only is it great to give everyone's hands a rest, it is also a fun reminder that we are an instrument all on our own. We can make so many sounds simply by tapping, clapping and yapping; and when all these different sounds come together in a flow, it is just magic.

I ran a drumming workshop for a dear friend's hen's day many years ago. During that session, we applied the words "Hana is the best, we love her" to one of the rhythms I was teaching. Since then, nearly every time I teach that rhythm, those words get into my head. Sometimes, I tell the story and we just end up chanting that as we play. I wonder if Hana can tell in those moments that a group of random people far away are chanting her name with drums in a circle once more. 😂

If you or anyone you know has an event coming up where you'd like to drum and chant your love for Hana, let me know. Anywhere, for all ages ❤️ www.boomshop.com.au

I finally got around to making an Instagram page! If you have Instagram and would like to follow me to see a post once every few months when I remember to post something, that would be most appreciated. It would be nice to have at least one more follower than my mum, though if is just you Kathleen, I'll still be happy 😁
