Footscray Community Arts’ new Lango stage features three overlapping shells, whose sculptural form is cloaked in patterns by First Nations artist, Moorina Bonini, that draw from South Eastern Kulin Nations mark-making representing Ancestors watching over performers. This connection mirrors historical practices, where ceremonies were once held under the stars, aligning with the locality of Place.

Moorina Bonini is a proud descendant of the Yorta Yorta Dhulunyagen family clan of Ulupna and the Yorta Yorta, Wurundjeri, and Wiradjuri Briggs/McCrae family and says, "The design is subtle yet strong, embodying the presence and significance of Sky Country and the Ancestors, deeply rooted in Aboriginal storytelling."

The Lango Stage is a powerful expression of our commitment to a First Nations-first approach, guided by the leadership of Footscray Community Arts’ longstanding Indigenous Advisory Group throughout the design process. Footscray Community Arts is proud to be embedding cultural knowledge and connection to Country into the heart of this space.

Lango - Opening in Summer 2025.

While the structure of the Lango Stage has steadily taken shape over the past nine months, the unforeseen inground conditions early in the build led to additional foundation work and significantly increased overall construction costs. To bring the venue to completion and ensure it opens in full scope as planned, we launched our fundraising campaign to raise $70,000 by the end of October 2025. Our community has raised $28,190 so far. Please give today via the link below and help us realise the final stage of this vision.

The design of Footscray Community Arts’ new outdoor performance space reimagines the landscape that the new Lango stage sits on. After deep consultation with the Indigenous Advisory Group and our local community, a gently sloping, accessible pathway - referred to as One Path for All - will guide visitors from our existing galleries down to the stage and riverfront. Lined with the bluestone salvaged from our former amphitheatre, this path physically and symbolically connects the site’s past with it’s future.

By supporting our current donation appeal, a re-Indigenised landscape will wrap our precinct with native grasses, tree plantings, and rain gardens designed to care for Country and support biodiversity, while preserving green space for community use. A custom-designed fire bowl by Moorina Bonini, created in collaboration with our neighbouring blacksmith forge Waterside Metal Art, will provide a dedicated space for First Nations storytelling and smoking ceremonies - embedding cultural practice at the heart of the precinct.

We still need to raise $42,150 to realise the full vision for these features, so please donate to Footscray Community Arts via the link below. Your support today will help us finish this space and create a legacy for generations.

Footscray Community Arts is excited to announce Lango, a brand-new, architecturally designed outdoor performance space opening in November 2025. The venue, designed by with landscaping by Simone Bliss Landscape Architects , will be a community-led space for live music, community events, creatively ambitious performances, markets, and cultural ceremonies. This design announcement showcases the thoughtfully integrated artwork by Indigenous artist and reflects extensive consultation with Footscray Community Art’s Indigenous Advisory Group, ensuring that cultural perspectives and connection to Country have been embedded throughout the space.

In Woi-Wurrung, Lango means “on the edge” - a powerful reference to both the space’s location on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in Footscray, and to the spirit of innovation that defines Melbourne’s western suburbs.

The word “Lango” has been gifted by Wurundjeri Elder and Footscray Community Arts’ Indigenous Advisory Group member, Aunty Annette Xiberras. Originally from a diary of language words preserved by to Aunty Annette’s grandmother, its use reflects an ongoing commitment to language preservation and cultural revitalisation - something Footscray Community Arts is honoured to be part of.

Realised through an $8.7m State Government investment, the precinct is a significant infrastructure upgrade for the west, where the population is expected to grow by 60% by 2041. This landmark investment highlights the vibrant culture that has been growing with the support of Footscray Community Arts.

We have $42,950 left to raise to reach our goal. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far - your support hasn’t gone unnoticed.

We’re creating a cultural landmark that the West can be proud of for generations - a place that honours First Nations storytelling and ceremony, with a fire bowl for smoking ceremonies, accessible pathways, and native plantings that connect the space to Country. This will transform how we share stories here at Footscray Community Arts.

Planned to open this summer, our new outdoor performance space will be a place for free or low-cost music events, creative and ambitious performances, markets, cultural ceremonies, and community gatherings.

The transformation of the Footscray Community Arts Precinct means building our future on historic foundations. Swipe through to see archival images of what the Footscray Community Arts Precinct is now.

In theme with our accidental unearthing of Footscray Community Arts' site heritage, we're going to take you on a quick tour of the history behind Footscray Community Arts' and the site we have called home for almost 50 years.

Footscray Community Arts has always been more than our venues and programming - Our precinct is a living symbol of what’s possible when community, culture, and creativity come together.

Footscray Community Arts’ story began in 1974, in a humble tin shed on the campus of Victoria University, then called Footscray Institute of Technology. Transformed by local artists, unionists and community leaders, it became a hub for migrant, Indigenous and working-class voices, amplifying underrepresented stories in Melbourne’s west.

Going back to the 1870s, Henderson House was built in 1872 and served Footscray in many roles: piggery, trading merchant, bank, and later, a scrap yard. By the 1970s, its bluestone structure faced demolition. Thanks to community advocacy in 1977 by passionate locals, including George Seelaf and Cr Vince Verduci, the site was saved and reclaimed for the community.

The founding vision for the reclaimed site was clear: to create a vibrant arts centre reflecting and supporting the communities of Melbourne’s west, under the mantra “access for all”.

What began as preservation became a foundation for decades of cultural work - and today, over 50 years later, that legacy continues.

By donating to Footscray Community Arts' current appeal (via the link below), you can help ensure the Footscray Community Arts Precinct remains thriving spaces of inclusion, creativity and community.

Our new outdoor performance space will be the centrepiece of a bold new design for the Footscray Community Arts Precinct. This redevelopment replaces our much-loved but aged and inaccessible bluestone amphitheatre with an ambitious new structure that will bring culture, Country, and community to the forefront.

But, we still need to raise $70,000 by October 15 to bring the full vision to life.

With consultation from our Indigenous Advisory Group and local communities, and designed by MGS Architects in collaboration with Simone Bliss Landscape Architects, every detail of our outdoor performance space has been shaped with a deep care to re-Indigenise this green space and include accessible pathways so that everyone can gather, celebrate, and experience creativity in the west together.

Your support today will help us finish the stage, light the fire, and create a legacy for generations.

Please donate now via the link below and be part of our shared history in the making.

What does it mean to be named by others and what does it mean to name oneself?

Footscray Community Arts is proud to present "We Have Been Called Many Things", an interactive exhibition and free workshop series that invites you to explore the vibrant, evolving identities of Chinese-speaking Australians.

Curated by Wilson Chun Wai Yeung and produced by Katherine Lee, both of Curatorial Ensemble, this exhibition features four engaging art projects that bring community voices to life.

Artists Barcode People (Qihao Liang & Tong Shu), Helen Kwok, Ming Liew and Yajuan Cheng each take us on a unique journey across memory, identity, and belonging. At times playful, and always curious, "We Have Been Called Many Things" is about sharing voices, histories, and the power of being known on one’s own terms.

"I MET AN ANGEL NAMED JACQUES doesn’t sit neatly in one genre or tradition; it bends between realism, poetry, and surreal intensity. The world is recognisable, but also heightened ... almost dreamlike ... because that’s how grief and desire feel when you’re living them." – Gideon D. Wilonja (writer/director)

Featuring a remarkable team of cast and creatives, lauded actor Ras Samuel (Kingdom of the Planet of The Apes, The Clearing) and Gideon D. Wilonja star and spar as Jacques and L'or in the lead roles of this premiere production.

Joining them on stage, Ben Chisholm, Sasha Hannequin, and Atinuke Abraham complete the exceptional ensemble brought together to bring this story to life.

Let's go back to the beginning: Did you know that before Footscray Community Arts was established in 1974, this site was an industrial and livestock hub?

Now, fast forward to early 2025, construction finally commenced on our long-awaited Precinct Revitalisation Project, but during the initial groundworks, we discovered that below the surface of the riverside lawn and our beloved amphitheatre, were materials from the site's former life. These findings set us back significantly, both financially and with our construction timelines, due to the extreme costs to remove the newfound materials from the construction site.

Now, we have just one month to raise $70,000 to complete the final touches of the outdoor performance space, which will help us ensure this new space is connected to and honours Country. This means features like accessible pathways throughout the riverside lawns, native plantings to contribute to the re-Indigenisation of the green space, and a ceremonial fire bowl for First Nations community.

Reaching this fundraising goal would mean building an outdoor space that supports high-quality artistic outcomes for community, led by community. This space will amplify community celebration and cultural exchange, enhancing our impact and service to art, culture and creativity.

Please donate today via the link below, knowing that you are contributing to the living legacy of community and creativity at Footscray Community Arts.

Coming together, for tomorrow.

We’re proud to share that we’re one step closer to the installation of the stunning tapestry ‘Welcome to Country – now you see me: seeing the invisible’ at the new Footscray Hospital.

As the official arts partner, Footscray Community Arts is honoured to support this powerful work, which was recently showcased in a trial hang at the Melbourne Convention Centre. This special preview offered a glimpse of what will soon become a permanent and meaningful presence within the hospital.

Weighing 135kg and made of 270km of wool, the team successfully suspended the 42-square metre tapestry for onlookers to see it in its full form.

Designed by Maree Clarke (Yorta Yorta/Wamba Wamba/Mutti Mutti/Boonwurrung) and Mitch Mahoney (Boonwurrung/Barkindji) the tapestry was weaved by a team of 12 at the Australian Tapestry Workshop.

The three-dimensional tapestry is one of the largest ever produced for a public hospital in Victoria and will welcome patients, staff, and visitors when the hospital opens in 2026.

The new Footscray Hospital tapestry is a collaboration between Plenary Health, Footscray Community Arts as the official arts partner for the new hospital, the Australian Tapestry Workshop, and the Tapestry Foundation of Australia, in collaboration with the Victorian Health Building Authority and Western Health.

The tapestry commission is supported by the Premier’s Suite, a partnership between the Tapestry Foundation of Australia, the State Government of Victoria, and the Australian Hotels Association.
