I had the absolute privilege of being invited by the NBCF to attend the Peter Mac cancer centre and do a tour of their labs, specifically in the research area around breast cancer. Not only was I in the presence of companies and other community people who donate to the NBCF but I got to meet some amazing passionate people who are dedicating their lives to the fight against breast cancer.
The CEO of the NBCF Cleola Anderiesz spoke about the amazing projects, research and programs that they fund and how passionate the NBCF is about working towards a future of zero deaths from breast cancer - what an amazing world that would be!
Seeing up close where our fundraising is directly going and the impact it makes was an incredible experience. One of the lead researchers, Ian Campbell gave a detailed presentation on the work that’s involved in working out why the increase of breast cancer diagnoses in young women are on the rise and what preventive measures we can do while also working on ways to help stop reoccurrence. He talked about how they are trying to figure out why some women under 40 are being diagnosed with more aggressive breast cancers such as Triple Negative have no known reason (which is me!).
Over the years there has been incredible strides forward on treatment options and our statistics on surviving a breast cancer diagnosis has also increased - but we still have so much more to go.
Over the next 5 years there will be more than 100,000 new cases of breast cancer in Australia & NZ and 16,000 of those will die. These numbers do not include reoccurrence from a previous breast cancer diagnosis.
So, how do we make a difference?
🩷 We self check regularly.
🩷 We advocate for ourselves - get the second opinion, get further testing if you want and ask the questions.
🩷 We fundraise while having the most fun time together!”
Thank you so much for this incredible opportunity!
